Long Action Savage vs Short Tube Nikon Monarch

Hi guys, I'm stumped on this. I have a Savage 110 7mm Rem Mag and am replacing my Bushnell 6x18 50mm with a Nikon Monarch 3x9 40mm. Anyway, I just noticed that the Nikon tube is a good 1" to 1.5" shorter than the Bushnell. With that, using Weaver base and rings, the Nikon tube is too short to mount using regular rings.

I know they make extension rings for improved eye relief but looking at them, I'm not sure if that will solve the problem or not. Until I buy a set however, I won't know for sure.

Just curious if anyone has had this issue and how they solved it? I leave for Wyoming in 5 weeks so I have some time, but I'd like to get the mounting issue solved quickly.

I appreciate your suggestions.

I've never used Weaver style extension mounts but I've used Leupold Standard extended and they work great.

I've got extended Leupold rings and bases on my long action Savage, to hold a short tube Weaver K6. It's worked great so far.

However, the next time I buy a Savage long action, I'm probably going to order a Brownell's 080-000-395. It's a once piece Picatinny rail and gives lots of mounting options. It should be easy to get eye relief with that mount.

EGW mount is another option, I have one (standard 1 pc) and am satisfied.. if i had to do it again on that rifle, i'd put an extended mount on it..F/TR...big piece of glass

the mount is not flat across the top of the chamber, it is raised on the mounting areas, so it provides some room to the loading port...not the same as having the mount cut down through the top of the loading port,

for a single shot or detach mag not much of an issue, otherwise you may want a little more room.. look at the pics, and it should be evident..

I went with an extended Warne base when I scoped my LA Stevens 200. It worked well with the original Warne base made for this rifle. My next Savage/Stevens, I'll do a one piece mount though.

Awesome suggestions guys. Just one question since I forgot to mention it. My 110 is left handed. Are these picatinny bases set up for the ejection port on either side?

I'd suggest something with a 1 piece base such as DNZ. This is the primary reason I won't purchase a Savage, especially a long action. Why they have to have a short action that is the same length as everyone else's long action and long actions that insanely long is beyond me.

1+ on the Picatinny base option it has the added benefit of if you wanted a back up scope you could(with the right rings) have one already sighted and ready to go. If mounted in the same slots they will usually be within 1 MOA without having to re zero the scope.

I needed a fast solution for a long action Savage a few years ago, this is what I ended up with: bases and rings. They hold a Burris FF2 3-9x40. I figured I'd have to replace them, but they've held zero on my 30-06 very well.

Weaver is making a very nice 1pc rail now.I usually buy Ken Farrell 1pc bases, but I bought a Weaver, and it's just as nice for 1/4 the price.

This ones a short action,but they make a long action,and you'll see it's on a lefty action.

I tried Weaver but they don't make any thing that fits a non-accutrigger Savage.

I just ordered an EGW mount so thanks to all for the suggestions.

Just wanted to post an update...

Just installed the EGW rail on Friday and I am very impressed. While this rail was listed as ambidextrous, it was set up for a right hand eject with a 1/16 bevel on the right hand side and no bevel on the left hand side. EGW CS told me for an extra $20 they would have beveled the left hand side and re-anodized the rail but that was solely for looks. I passed on that option as I was assured it would work on a left handed eject rifle. Anyway, the rail is installed and I am very impressed the scope mounting options it provides. I also have no doubt that it will work flawlessly with my left hand eject.

As a side note, EGW was one of only two companies that I found that made a flat rear rail and the only company that made one that would work on a left handed rifle.

Thanks to all who provided insight on my problems.
