Logically … what is next?

Scott Evans

Staff Alumnus
I have a:
16” AR-15 set up for CQB.
A Mossberg 590 12 gage, also for CQB
An AR-15 HBAR Match for target.
An AR-10 as a main battle rifle.
A Winchester model 94 30-30 for Bambi in thick cover (open sights).
A Savage 110 in 7mm Rem. Mag. for Bambi across the field (300 yards +) or black bear
And a few muzzle loaders.

Now my long range goal is to own one of everything :) and to be an all around “rifleman”, properly outfitted to accomplish any righteous task that such a man might undertake.

Looking at my list and my goal what would you think the priority is for my next rifle.

:D

Scott, looks to me like you should have gotten a 22 long rifle a long time ago..

might I suggest, Marlin 39, Winchest 9422, Ruger 10-22?

I would have to suggest ammo instead of another rifle. But if you want a .308 &/or .223 bolt action would be nice.

Yes! Glaring hole in your lineup...a nice Ruger 10/22 for plinking and pest control, an entire day of shooting fun for under $10. Everybody needs a good .22 rifle.

I have a 10/22 with a Hogue overmolded stock, Butler Creek bull barrel and a Tasco Pronghorn 3-9x40 set up as my "miniature tactical rifle", complete with flip covers for the scope. They are fun, useful, and cheap to shoot.

Agree, you have a hole

Scott, you need a bolt .308 tack driver, for out to 800 yards, the 7mm will do it a/ok, but with bad recoil, and not nearly as accurate as a good bolt .308 with the right loads.
Plus the fact .308/7.62 ammo is alvailable at reasonable prices everywhere, and a lot cheaper than 7mm.
To my knowledge there are no match loads for the 7...........
And bullet weight is limited to 175............
Suggest a Rem 700 VS, or A PSS,,,,,,or a Win 70 Stealth.
All with 26" barrels.

Definately grab a couple of .22 rifles. Ruger 1022 as previously recommended is a great choice. My personal choice, shop around for an older Winchester .22 like a Model 52 or 75. Among .22 bolt actions these models are icons.
Another suggestion, how about a varmit rifle in .223 or 22-250?
Take Care

Couple ways you could go-

Long range tactical rifle

Long range "Classic" blackpowder, like a Sharps

Or the ever-popular, ultimate cash burner:
Class 3 weapons. M16, FAL, Suppressed 22 rimfire.

Why not get a handgun for when you need to buy time to get to your rifle?

If I were fortunate enough to be in your shoes, then I might be tempted to look for some good varmint medicine in .22-250.

Seems to me that you don't have any other needs in the tactical arena (assuming that you already have a couple of solid handguns that is).

looks like a pretty full dance card but there are alternative flavors available

a Kalashnakov is a quite excelent machine

every rifleman should know how to field strip one

a CMP Garand is another

22LR is quite useful
they come in all varieties
bolt,lever, PUMP,semi, rolling block

if you are really wanting the whole slate than 416 rigby and a 50bmg are required

;)

A semi-auto .22 rimfire would allow you to develop proficiency at hitting multiple targets from the offhand position. That would then justify the AR-stuff; what good are they if you don't have this skill?

With the broad variety of 7mm bullets available, the memories of the days the 7Maggie owned the world of long-distance shooting plus the numbers of elk killed at long range, the range of its abilities are endless--assuming you handload.

Other fun and useful critters would be bolt-actions in .223 and 243.

I do have a few defensive handguns; I need them to make the holsters … so which ever holster is next determines the next pistol. Not so with the long guns.

The big, big Game guns while necessary and deserve to be on my list :) (one day I’ll have that double or two…) it will be at least 3 years until I can even think about such a trip on this continent let alone another. The biggest thing that I’ll hunt in the time being is white tail and eastern black bear.

OK … I’m convinced that the .22 is a necessary addition along with the long-range tack driver. I think of the .50BMG a being in the long-range category rather then Big Game. If I go LRTD (Long Range Tack Driver) what do you suggest? Or are there other category holes in my collection that would seem more important priority wise?

Thanks for the input all … I’m enjoying this thread. :)

Based on reading the various gun rags as well as TFL about long-range accuracy, an overall consensus seems to lie with cartridges such as the .308 and maybe some 6mm variant.

Short, fat cases seem to be the order of the day, so at some point the new .300 Short Magnum will probably--or possibly--beat out the .308. More velocity out where a bullet might come back to sub-sonic seems to be a critical item.

However, says ol' Art--rather smugly--I can show you two four-inch, four-shot groups at 500 yards from my ancient .06. :) Close enough to center to ruin a deer's day.

I've read of some of the .50 BMG guys in Aridzony who are getting 5" groups at 1,000 yards. Haven't checked out the Montana folks' website about their feats.
