I bought a new Savage model 10 fxp in .308, and am struggling a bit to load it. I am not new to firearms, I have an Enfield 303, a shotgun and a handgun.

The Savage does not have a detachable box mag, and it does not have a floor plate. It appears to be designed to be loaded from the top through the bolt opening, and I have successfully loaded it this way, but it seems a bit difficult to do. Is there a trick to it, or is it just a matter of gettign used to it?

You're correct that it's designed to be loaded from the top, in an open bolt position. It's just a matter of getting used to the loading process. Generally, align the cartridge on top of the magazine and press it in with your thumb. After you've loaded the rifle a half-dozen times you'll be loading it without even thinking about the process.

I have several blind magazine rifles and they all load the same way. There is a small tactile difference in loading a staggerfeed Savage and a centerfeed Savage, but it's nothing to worry about. Enjoy your rifle, it's a keeper.

I have a Savage 110 (left handed) and it is sort of hard to load also.

I do have arthritis in my hands and also neuropathy so that could be some of the reason, but this rifle seems a little more difficult than other rifles that load with the bolt open...I have had and used several.

I had hoped that usage would "soften" it up, approx. 500 rounds and it is still difficult and my fingers are sore...LOL

The rifle is a tack driver....the shooter is not.

thanks all, I was hoping it was just a little hard to do, I am sure I will get used to it. I felt sort of like an idiot.
