Im am trying to load some barnes 38gr varmint grenade HP FB for a 223 in an AR platform. I'm having trouble crimping the bullets. I'm using a Dillion carbide die and Dillion crimp die. I have looked a little into this and people say to just barely put a crimp on them. dose anyone have any experience with this bullet. also, I trim all my 223 brass for AR rifles to 1.745 using a Dillion trim die and trimmer and since the bullets are flat base I am having to chamfer the inside of the case. I am planing on buying a lee neck expanding die. would this be better then chamfering. on barnes website (attached below) it says to seat at 2.190. I'm seeding at 2.180 in regards to seeding how low could I go if I wanted to in regards to shooting safely.

I load for several AR's and don't crimp on any of them. And I would never crimp a bullet without a cannelure.

Any specific reason why you feel the need to crimp?

I chamfer and don't have any issues seating flat base bullets (most of what I shoot are flat base). Putting a chamfer on the inside of the case mouth prevents scratches on the exterior of the bullet that can affect accuracy.

I crimp because you can push the bullet in, and under recoil i'm worried it will do the same. I tested the bullets with a light crimp and it seemed to help significantly

Will it crimp better if you lengthen your OAL? Maybe with such a small bullet you are seating past the ogive? Though, i can't imagine what would really cause a collet die not to do its job except the brass being too short

Sorry, I just read dillion, I was assuming an FCD. Is there any way you can tighten up the neck tension, backing out expander or FLing deeper?
