Load for 91 Argentine

A friend gave me some loads for my 91 Arg for a Cowboy Action Shoot that shot right to the point of aim (metal plate @ 80 yrds) so I ordered some of the same 180 grn .312 lead gas check bullets from Moyer's Cast Bullets. His box of ammo said that it was loaded with IMR 4198 24 grns. Does this sound reasonable? I don't have a loading book that lists this combination of bullet type and the powder?

Yes, that sounds reasonable, but I'm sure someone with access to Quickload can confirm/deny. The 7.65x53 Arg has plenty of case capacity, but 24gr of fast burning 4198 should be a nice low pressure load for the old mauser.

QuickLOAD puts that at 45 Auto pressures. Just under 18,000 psi, and a little less than 1900 fps from the full 31" tube. Looks like just 22.3 grains of IMR 4227 would do about the same thing for 7% less charge weight and 1000 psi higher peak pressure. Both are around 50% case fill, so your velocity consistency could likely be improved and you could avoid flash-over pressure spikes by putting a small tuft of polyester pillow filling over the powder charges to hold them against the flash hole.
