Load Data for Hornady 270 110 grain HPBT- OAL

I am beginner at reloading and learning from others as I go along. I went to local sporting goods store and they only had hornady 270 110 grain HPBT with canelurre.

Looking at Hogdgon web page and Lee manual indicates a starting load of 51.0 grains and COL of 3.250 for for both for 110 grain HDY HP or 110 grain jacketed.

When I was checking the bullet seating depth it seems something is not correct. Bullet would be way to high up at 3.250. Nowhere near canelurre.

I attached a picture which shows one bullet at 3.120 with brass near canelurre and one at 3.210. My lee die would not go lower than the 3.120 and the brass edge is not quite near the center of the canelurre.

So do I have the wrong load data for this bullet or is the seating depth incorrect? I suspect the published data is for a much longer bullet.

Does anyone have the correct load data for this bullet in 270 ?
I know OAL is not a fixed number and that can vary by reloader but just trying to be safe when I look at min OAL on Lee manual indicating 3.250 and I am not wanting to load high pressure load due to an my error.

First, Welcome to TFL!

Second, welcome to the wonderful world of rollin' your own ammo!

I've not loaded the particular bullet you are loading, but I have loaded many hundreds of Hornady's 110gr V-Max ..... some years ago, back when they had no canelure (still have several boxes) .....my latest Hornady manual (9th) does not list your bullet (stuff changes so fast, anymore), though they have a 110gr V-MAX w/cannelure, now ..... they list OAL at 3.165".

A quick check of my notes on the V-max load I used years ago says I used an OAL of 3.110" .... and ran it over a charge of 47gr of IMR4064, with a WLR primer ...... in various cases (notes do not show enough variation in MV between Remingiton, Winchester, Federal and Frontier(!) to make much difference..... I shot a lot of prairie dogs with that load.....

If it were me, I'd start by seating to the cannelure .... with a start load and work up ...... see how that goes, and then play with seating depth if that's not satifactory.

Be safe, Have fun, Learn something, and don't forget to write it down, or you'll forget it!
