Just picked up my 586 no dash 4" today. I purchased this from a S & W forum member who answered my WTB post. It is in excellent condition and according to the previous owner probably never shot. He stated that he had not shot it but was not the orginal owner. It doesn't have a cylinder turn line that I can see and the recoil shield looks pristine as well. The serial number is ABE094X which would I think make a 1982 model. Like buying a new gun. Now the big question is should I shoot it? As nice as it is would you? Weigh in with your opinions.

Beautiful, beautiful gun. If you didn't buy it for an investment, I
would shoot it. I have one that is a safe queen. It is a 6", nickle,
nib, never fired, 586-1, circa 1986:

Mighty nice.
Yes, there is a turn line, no doubt.
So, now you have the excuse that you need to shoot it.
There's supposed to be be a new version of the 586 out soon.
They haven't been made in a long time.
Enjoy.
And if you can't bring yourself to get it dirty, no doubt someone here will volunteer.

I don't get people who have nice guns and don't shoot them. It's like guys who have rare sports cars and never drive them.

The gun's sole reason for being is to be shot, so shoot it! It's gorgeous!

Nice gun!!

When I was 12(about 25yrs ago) my dad and I both bought 586's. It was my first ever handgun. I had to cut grass for two years to get it paid for.

Mine was a 6" 586 no dash with a partridge front combat sight. When I was younger we both shot squirrels with light 357 loads. They both shot great but were a touch heavy to carry hunting, but it was nice with magnum loads. Sadly I eventually traded the gun off for something else, you know how hind sight goes....................

To me the L frame looks better than the Colt Pythons of that time.

M686

Solved the dilemma today. Bought a Model 686 shooter and will put the Model 586 in the safe at least for a while. The 686 is from the same time period early 83 with 4" barrel. Comes with pachs on it but has the target grips included and the box and papers. Now I can sling some lead and not worry about messing up the safe queen:D

There is a definite turn line on the cylinder. Even with a safe queen, I have never worried about turn lines. Most guns come from the factory with some turn line and I have never liked the stress caused by worrying about it. As long as the gun shows no signs of abuse, you're good to go.

686 no dash, shooter

I brought home the Model 686 that I bought to shoot so I could put my 586 away in the safe. It has the orginal box and paperwork no cleaning assessories though. It appears to be a 1983 model (ABS serial number). It also has the M stamped on the crane for the factory mod. As you can see by the pictures it came with Pachs and with the original target grips. There is a date on the inside of the grips of Sept. 1983. It is a bit scuffed up here and there but with SS I can clean it up some. Went thru the timing checks and end play check with no apparent problems. Hope to get some lead thru it later in the weekend. Here are a couple of quick pictures.
