lingo

I am new to the organized world of ccw. The terms are really odd to me. I do not understand the information on the various carry forms and equipment because of my lack of knowledge of the lingo. Wondering if any one had a sight to suggest that would help me decipher the anagrams that are so common. owb iwb cant....an so forth

i don't know of a sight, but I can define a few:

IWB: inside waistband carry
OWB: Outside waistband carry
CCW: concealed carry weapon (refers to the gun itself)
CCP: Concealed carry permit (Varies from state to state) Called CPL, or Concealed pistol license here in WA state.
Rig: term used for your carry method.
Cant: a term referring to the angle at which a holster keeps the weapon. Quick primer on Cant

FMJ: full metal jacket ammunition
HP: Hollow point ammunition
FTF: failure to feed. Gun fails to cycle a round into the chamber from the magazine (semi automatic pistol)
FTE: failure to extract a spent casing from the gun correctly.

FTF and FTE lead to the gun jamming most of the time.

These are a few I can think of off the top of my head. Let me know if you are thinking about any others.

BG - bad guy
BUG - back up gun
Strong side - dominant hand, usually what you normally shoot with
Weak side - the other side
3 o'clock, 6 o'clock, etc - lay a clock face on your waist, parallel to the ground, with 12 o'clock at your belt buckle. The"time" is where you carry your weapon
Offhand - not from a rest

I'm sure there are more.

Don't forget TEOTWAWKI! jk

SD: self defense
HD: home defense
POA: point of aim

That's all I can think to add as of now.

Oh IBTL (In Before The Lock) is a good one to know, I'm sure you'll figure that one out sooner or later.

SA situational awareness
JHP jacketed hollow point bullet
SOB small of back carry, 6oclock, usually horizontal, also a can of worms.
LEO law enforcement officer
C&L cocked and locked, condition 1 and only
To add to golfnutrly, you'll also see,
CHL CHP CFL CWH etc. These terms are used for the gun, the permit, and the action of carrying legally somewhat interchangeably.

Must be forgetting some....

POI= point of impact...
then there are the routine ones not just for the gun board...
IIRC if I remember correctly
FWIW for what it's worth
YMMV your mileage may vary
IMHO in my humble opinion...

Good one, pax.

Hey, now that you had your picture taken with a shotgun (the new W&G), are you gonna add more long gun stuff to CC? I hope?

:o Thanks guys.

Lee, I sure enjoyed helping Diane wring that one out. Sweet little gun. I haven't seen her article yet, but I doubt she was as effusive in her praise as we both were in person. (Kind of embarrassing to gush, but dang ... I really like that gun. It's on my wish list now, the first shotgun I've ever really wanted to have.)

Click on "Library" in the header above, scroll down to lower left "acronyms". That easy!!

Hang in there, you'll pick it up!

Stay safe, and armed.

Bob
PS: SWMBO=she who must be obeyed, as in spouse or Pax.
