Limited edition - worth it?

I looked at a limited edition anniversary rifle (Ruger 10/22) at Cabela's.

Love the look of it -- but wondering --- do limited edition firearms hold value?

This particular model has a production run of 750.

I've never really invested in collector edition (I'm usually a find/flip person).

They worth it?

What's your experience?

I'm more interested in investing than warm and fuzzy feelings.

I love 10/22's and always will because it was my first rifle. In fact, that first 10/22 is sitting not five feet from me right now. Unfortunately, simply being a collector's edition doesn't guarantee it'll be worth any more for you than any other 10/22 in the future. Kind of like having a collector's edition Ford Taurus. Special edition doesn't change the value when sooo many were produced that you can't throw a rock without having it bounce off a taurus and land on a 10/22.

Only if you don't ever every shoot it.

And even then there is no guaranteed return value.

I am pretty sure that historically and generally special editions not only don't hold the value but in many cases they are worth less than normal guns.
If the "special" is something you like then go for it, but don't begin to think of it as an investment.

Only buy limited editions if they have features you want. Then enjoy your rifle by shooting the heck out of the thing.

As a general rule, you will never make money on any "limited", “commemorative”, “anniversary” edition.

The Blue Book of Gun Values has a section on Commemorative Winchesters. The resale value on the "Montana State Trooper commemorative" rifle, for example, was far less than its sale price. Not because Montana State Troopers are not worth commemorating in some form or any or another, but probably due to other factors.

Kind of like having a collector's edition Ford Taurus.

+1. You never know, but I don't see that being your key to a successful retirement. If you like the gun, buy it and shoot it. If you plan on buying it and putting it away, I don't think it would be a good use of your money.

I wouldn't. It would likely be 20 or more years before it would become appealing to collector types. Then you would have to find that certain someone that would be interested. And then you might make $100-200 dollars of actual profit. That's a horrible investment. Look at all the winchester model 94 special editions over the years. Today you can buy 30 year old limited edition, bicentenial, etc. models for about the same price as the standard models of the same era give or take a couple hundred bucks. If you want a special and unique gun to hang on the wall and display or to use then go for it. If you really like it then I would buy it to use it.

My only experience with limited editions is with handguns. In my case I never buy a gun I won't shoot and I've only bought a couple of limited edition S&Ws because I like the features they had which weren't available on a stock model of the same gun. Don't know what mine are worth but they ain't for sale. :p
