I love my Limbsaver recoil pads - have them on all CF guns.

But I find they are getting gooey , as if melting ???

I transport my rifles in a hard case with foam liner. When i go to take the gun out , the recoil pad is stuck to the foam.

Ps I do't beleive I'm getting any gun oil or solvent on them????

Any advice on this problem???? Thanks JD

Location and car heat

Not sure where you live but I've had plastic melt in my car during hot days here in TX. If you aren't going straight from the house to the range then that would be my guess. It may be the foam in the case and not the limb saver.

If you are then I"m stumped as well....

Are they the slip-on or grind-to-fit models? How old are they?

My guess: the rubber is probably decomposing. Many kinds of rubber will decompose into a gooey mess...

Easiest thing to do is call Limbsaver and tell them the problem. If there is a problem with the pad, they will replace it.

I've heard of this before .
Could be bad batch of rubber. Some plastics deteriorate in time . Could be reaction with other materials -plastics , solvents .

I had a similar problem with my S&W 625 and a Pelican case; the case foam wanted to leave a pattern on the side of the barrel. In my case it was likely the cleaning solvent or oil or something. Your case sounds like the same interaction you get in a tackle box. You ever open your tackle box to find that an artificial worm has melted through two or three of your good bobbers? It's tragic.

I'd wrap a piece of cotton cloth around your butt stock while it's in the case; keep the kids separated.

KIK-EEZ

I quit selling Limbsaver Pads for this very reason , plus the difficulty of grinding them . KIK-EEZ are a superior pad in every way and are what I use now 90% of the time along with a few Pachmyers , the 750 is a great pad too !

I've also heard of this before. I also seem to recall hearing that it was more of a problems with their earlier pads - maybe they changed the rubber formula.

I never liked the super-soft feel of the Limbsavers. That's why I use Pachmayr. They are also easy to grind.

I've had the same thing happen when I kept my gun in a silicone gun sock, and also when it was in a gun case with foam padding. When the gun is stored on a gun rack there is no further "melting".

If anyone has a solution to somehow treating the recoil pad with something, I'd like to know it.

Limbsaver had a recall on many of their early pads for the reason you described. I had 2 that developed a similar problem about a year apart from one another. 2 phone calls yielded 2 new pads in my mailbox.

Sounds like plasticizer migration. Plasticizer migration is the leaching of the plasticizer or oil that makes the Limbsaver flexible. Plasticizer migration can be caused by solvents, contact with incompatible material(foam in the case), improper compounding of the original raw material, & will be exacerbated by heat & not allowing the product to "breath"(storing in an airtight environment-such as a case).
You could try wiping the affected surface with a cloth dampened in methylated spirits.

I noticed how sticky and easily worn the Limbsaver pads are and covered mine with a Kick Killer Leather pad. It gives me a bit more padding on top of looking better and less friction when putting it to my shoulder.

They work well, but I don't believe that they will last as long as many of the other products on the market from ordinary wear and tear.

Sorry, just a correction. I didn't make it clear in my statement that it is the Limbsaver that works well but doesn't appear to last as long as some other harder plastic/rubber products. The way I wrote my statement it sounds like it was the Kick Killer that lacked durability which is not true at all.

My apologies to Kick Killer.
