Likely scenario in 2004 is extremely ugly. What are we to do???

I don't know how many of you have thought about this or not. Now would be the time though.

Flash forward: 2004

The economy is in a downturn.

The Dems control the House (probably) and Senate (definitely) by slim majorities. In order for the Repubs to keep control they will have to buck a SERIOUS historical trend in off-year elections.

Bush will face a serious Dem challenger w/o the Clinton baggage (I don't think the Dems will put Hitlery or Gore up next time - the Dems are a lot of things, but politically stupid isn't one of them). Bradley is a little far left. More likely Gephardt or someone closer to the center. I'm also convinced Cuomo still has ambitions to be Prez, he's just waiting for the right moment.

Bush will be painted by the media as the vilest, most heartless, cruelist, conservative ever. We'll see news footage of starving children, homeless families, stories of fat, rich people whooping it up, whatever; they will pull out all stops next time around. As a result, Bush will have to do something to establish his "compassionate" credentials.

The Assault Weapons ban ends up on Bush's desk. He caves to prove what a caring individual he is and signs it.

What you gonna do? Who are you gonna vote for?

All Bush has to do, if he really wants my vote, is become the most pro-gun, pro-individual president in the history of the office. Not hard.

At this rate, Bush won't be getting my vote in 2004.

Later,
Chris

George W, should remember what knocked his daddy out of the saddle.
Remember this?
"Read my lips.....no new taxes."
How George W. handles more gun control laws could determine if he stays in the saddle or not.

learn to cache...

Vote libertarian (Bush loses, commies take the executive), race to buy up guns and ammo, learn to cache quick and prepare for the worst in 5 to ten years.

:D

I hope and pray that what you are predicting does not come true.

I believe that the very next time the liberals/socialists are in power, we will lose many of our freedoms. I don't think we will live in the same America after a few years of their control.

As for the action we are to take, I am not afraid to say that even the thought makes me shudder. We are bound to our countrymen, required by honor to protect these freedoms for the future.

Actually the Dems haven't a prayer of taking the House by 2004 and it is very questionable if they can take the Senate. I'm also fairly confident Bush can maintain this false prosperity thru 2004. His tax cut will, the same as Reagans, put massive dollars and growth into the economy. Unlike with Reagan though we do not, today, have a fundamentally sound manufaturing/market economy which can absorb the short term government debt such an action will create.

What I'm getting to is that the Dems are, barring a major screw up from Bush, toast. What we really have to worry about is Bush and the Republicans. And as a lfe long Repub and strong Bush supporter I do not hesitate to say that I have a growing feeling of unease about dubya.

Let's just say that this man is not dumb in the way the Dems have accused him, nor dumb in a Slick Willy embarrassing himself way. I am seeing a consumate politician, like a Jimmy Carter with leadership ability or a Ronald Reagan with no soul...or Bill Klintoon with the ability to achieve his ends without regular foolish public spectacles.

I'm starting, vaguely, to feel as though we may have picked the worst of two choices and THAT is a scary feeling...

Look for the serious challenge to come from a Governor’s mansion. All successful non-incumbent presidential races have been won by current or ex Governor’s since Watergate. (Carter, Reagan ,Clinton, Bush.) Not to say there won’t be candidates from the House or Senate, just not successful ones. I am not versed enough on all the state’s Governors to take a realistic guess as to who it might be.

As for the economy, my magic 8 ball says we will probably go through most of the pain this year. By early next year, most of the companies driving the high tech mania that fueled 95-99 will have collapsed, consolidated or survived. That’s the point a theoretic tax cut will start to have effect on spending patterns and we are off to the races again.

As for the media, well, never get in a war of words with someone who buys ink by the barrel. There is no doubt that every incident of near tragedy will be dredged to the forefront to highlight Bush’s cruelty. And, of course, each report will reference the “illegitimacy” of the Bush presidency.

Anyone remember all the doom and gloom stories about homelessness during the Reagan/Bush years? Notice how the stories just disappeared in January of 1993? Homeless problem solved? Nope. The latest reports I’ve seen (last fall) they were just as bad as in 92. (Though, the report didn’t provide raw numbers, which makes me suspect it.) Look for that issue to be re-discovered.

But for the assault weapon’s ban, I think he has already said he would renew it. The onerous is on us to convince him otherwise. As it is, we are in danger of being taken for granted in the political process. Always make them think they need you more than you need them.

Those are my random thoughts for the evening.

If we are going to have a recessionary period, I believe Bush has done a better than average job of getting the press to admit it started under Clinton. Since most recessions last one to three years, he should be able to claim credit for ending it.

No doubt at all the Dem's are going to mount a serious campaign. It's already started. Who will their nominee be? Heck, who even knew who GW was in 1996? Four years is an eternity.

Getting the AW ban to sunset is our problem, and if I had to bet money, I'd bet we can't get enough gun owners together to make it worth GW's political capital to face a media onslaught by not renewing the ban. It's not GW's problem, it's ours. We've got the ban because too many gun owners didn't give a rip about it. And, with the exception of most of the TFL members and like-minded gun owners, most gun owners won't give a rip if it sunsets or not.

2004.............Dem's regain all..........recipe for....

A full blown revolt, not seen since the American Revolution.....
These folks do not realize that the MAJORITY of LEO's, and the Military hate their collective gut's, and at the very least find them abhorrent.( only the Chief's, and politico's, that suck up to the Liberal left ).
And this does not even take gun owners into account.
If a full blown Dem takeover were to ensue.....WHO is gonna do their dirty work???.
The U N is ALL that would be left, and or capable.
Can you even envision the scene of Blue helmets on the streets of the good ole' U S of A???......would NOT want to be wearing one.
I for one, am not going to worry one wit..........
Take it as she comes boys!!!!!!
We have been harrassed enough for the last eight years.....let's take a "small", breather....WE deserve it.

I don't care what happens between now and then, I am voting Libertarian.

People who value personal liberty and responsibility are in a situation very similar to that of the African American community (not saying these two groups dont overlap) in this country. Namely we have a party that takes our support for granted. They keep us afraid of the opposition coming into power. They wont do what we want, because they "know" we wont vote for anyone else. They "know" they can count on us. They "know" this because it happens every election. Until we walk away, they are not going to pay attention to us, they dont have to.

I know the tired responses - not voting Republican will get Democrats elected Blah Blah Blah. I dont see enough of a difference to make it matter. Maybe if the people got a taste of unbridled Demoocrats from 2004 - 2008 and Libertarians got enough support in 2004 to get public attention then we will see the revolution at the polls in 2008. Othwerwise nothing is going to change.

Flame on. I don't care.

Who knows what will become of 2001, 2002 and 2003? I certainly don't have a clue and have enough to worry about without looking to 2004 with a worst case. Do what you can in the short term, because the long term is beyond all of us.

I think what is important is to pay very close attention to what is happening at the state levels. I get the feeling that the Dem's realize that gun control is not a great platform. Too much of their B.S. has been flatly disproven, and I'm sure the image of algore proposing a national gunowner photo I.D. to the union-member NRA supporting gunowners that ended up voting against him will be a lesson in the next election.

I'm considering writing my (Dem) Congresswoman and Senator and explaining to them that I might vote Democrat next time around if they would just lay off the gun issue. Of course, I'm lying through my teeth, but they don't know that. If I get enough cohorts to do this, it could have an effect on how much gun control crap they try to push through.

I don't know how your state legislatures work, but our house and senate are both determined by population. If our senate was based on county lines, we'd be heavily Republican here in Oregon. Right now, we hold a slim majority in both houses, with a leftist Governor at the helm.

There are some legislators in both eastern Washington and Oregon that are working to propose a bill to re-draw the state lines of both states, splitting the territories vertically instead of horizontally. Basically, the left half (how appropriate) would become a new state, and the right half would become its own state. The idea has support, and I'd move in a heartbeat if it passed.
