Lights on Guns?

I've always been taught that weapon mounted lights are a "no-no" because they break one of the cardinal gun handling safety rules: "never point the muzzle at something that you are not willing to destroy" Searching rooms with a light mounted on the muzzle of any weapon certainly compromises this safety rule.

I've also been told that a weapon mounted light creates creates a target and this also, is to be avoided.

Despite all this, several recent videos extoll the virtue of weapon mounted lights, on pistols, carbines, and shotguns. Has the conventional wisdom changed so drastically?

I would appreciate hearing everyone's thoughts on the "pros and cons" of weapon mounted lights. Do you use one and why?

Thanks and good shooting!

Good topic Kurt. But could you please repost it to Harry Humphries' hand-to-hand break out into a sweat forum here at The Firing Line? Thanks.
