Lighter-Weight Low-Budget Carry Gun Pics

I just felt like posting a couple of pics... Feel free to add pics of cheaper light to medium-weight carry guns if you like... Left to right in top pic: Kahr CW45 w/Crimson Trace, Kahr CW9, Ruger SP101 .357 Magnum, Charter Arms Bulldog .44 Special, SCCY CPX-1 9mm (Modified and highly tweaked... the non-safety CPX-2 is a better bet), Phoenix HP22A .22 (I'm not really endorsing a .22 for CCW but it just happened to be in this pic), Ruger LCP .380 w/10-rd. ProMag.

I hear you... The SP101 is kinda heavy for it's size... 25 oz... I just wanted to lay my handguns out for a pic, and the lower cost/weight theme was the best I could come up with for a title on the spur of the moment. I don't care for REALLY heavy guns... 25 oz. is my limit. If I ever feel a need for more firepower, I'd rather carry two light ones than one heavy one.

I'm going to take it from your user name you're a fan of Kahrs :p What's your personal range review on the CW pistols? If you were going to recommend/convince someone to buy one versus something similarly priced and sized, say a Glock, etc. what's your best point for it? :)

Both my Kahrs have been highly reliable and trouble-free since out-of-box. Their extractors are really big and heavy-duty. Kahrs are thinner than comparable Glocks (...the single-stack G36 in .45, for example...) but are as reliable IMHO. The Kahr CW9 is an especially sweet shooter... though the trigger pull is a bit long, it's smooth and consistant. The recently announced CM9 is a "CW-line" (economy) version of the already-popular (and smaller) PM9. It's hitting the shelves now and will sell like hot-cakes.

308Gunner,

I'll chime in also as I have and carry a CW9.

Main attraction is that the CW9 is thinner being a single stack. Points very well for me. Very smooth DA trigger. No problems with the gun in over 1,000 rounds (don't really keep that good of records, I just reload and shoot).

Nothing against Glocks but they have just never "felt" right in my hand.

"What do you think of Sccy? My local gun store wont even carry it. Said it was the biggest pos he had ever seen."

From what I've read, apparently a couple guys who had previously worked at Kel-Tec started up SCCY a few years ago. I have mixed feelings about SCCY. They seem to be sincere and trying hard to build a reputable company. They send out replacement parts at no cost through a simple phone call. I know this through personal experience. But as a new manufacturer they are going through some growing pains.

The CPX-1 9mm had a lot of problems early-on with the safety inadvertantly banging on while shooting. "Safety-disable kits" are available to circumvent this problem, and they have altered the safety set-up somewhat on the current production CPX-1. They also now sell a safety-less version called the CPX-2.

Their other main bugaboo has been unreliable mag-releases... i.e. the magazines were inadvertantly dropping out while shooting on too many guns. They've also made some strides in correcting this.

I knew what I was getting into when I bought my CPX-1 (second-hand). I'm retired and actually wanted a "project-gun". With a lot of work, I was able to modify and tweak mine to get it running reliably. A 10+1 rd. 17-oz. 9mm is a really handy gun to have. I like mine now and carry it often. I wouldn't call it a good range gun though. I'd put it in the "designed for carry-a-lot, shoot-little" category. Some people report on the net that they haven't had any problems with their SCCY. It's like that...

Their design and quality-control has been somewhat lacking in the past but my feeling is that SCCY is trying to overcome their start-up problems and improve their quality. Launching into the field of successful firearms manufacturing is not an easy task. I hope they make it. So... that's what I think of SCCY at this point in time... Mixed.

Nice looking group of handguns there. Here are some of my mid-weight, mid-priced carry guns.

Bersa Thunder .380, which I carry in the summer:

Interesting picks and pics, KyJim. Smiths and a Colt... nice! They maybe CAN be kinda moderately priced used on a good day...

I nearly bought one of those ever-popular Bersa Thunder .380's on impulse last weekend but decided another .380 would be a bit too indulgent right now. They are apparently a good value... lot of fans...

Hey 8 shot 357... thank you for the condescending comments about someone who may not be able to collect the same "quality" handguns you (may) have. Why did you even open this thread? You seem to be trolling for trouble. Go crawl under a rock!

Nice pic JD... Like the replacement grips... I hear you; the 9mm Mak is clearly (IMHO too) one of the very best values in carry guns.

Confused about... what?... weight? It's all relative. Anything 28 oz. and under (or so, loaded) fits into MY lightweight carry category... or call it MY light-to-middle-weight carry category if you want. I envisioned this as basically a pic thread... I'm not real fussy about particular weight dividing lines... Just basically carry guns that aren't hi-cap heavies...
