Light weight 3"

I am looking for a light weight 3" 5 - 6 shot fixed sight revover for CCW. I have a 4" taurus model 66 7 shot .357 which I think is a little big for me to conceal. I would like to stick to .357, but I am considering .38 +P also. I have seen the offerings from S&W, Ruger, and Taurus but I cant find any light weight models. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough?

Thanks.

I have a Taurus 85, blued with wood grips, 3" barrel, .38Spl.+p fixed rear sights and it is a very nice carry and fun to shoot. I can't upload the pic right now, but I will try when everything is back to normal.

I own a Taurus 85, .38Spl.+P, 3" barrel, 5 shot, blued with wood grips, fixed rear sights. It is light, easy to conceal, and fun to shoot...For less than $300;) I can't upload a pic until the TFL server gets back to normal, but will try then...

Those 3 manufacturers are pretty much it... What exactly do you want? What weight range are you trying to hit?

I love revolvers and only give grudging respect to my autos, but ... if you want a REALLY small handgun you may have to look at a Jennings/Jimenez/KelTec/Kahr pocket auto.

I have a Taurus 85, .38Spl. +P, 3" barrel, blued with wood grips, rear fixed sights, light weight (but not an Ultra Lite), easy concealment, fun to shoot, for under $275.00.;)

I prefer al steel myself. If you can find a 3" M36 square butt in 38 Special, buy it. The other choice would be a M10 round butt in 38 Special. If you desire 357 Magnum, look for a 3" M13. All would be used.

S&W used to offer (back around 2000 or so) a lightweight 3" j-frame 38special. It was 38+p, not 357mag, but otherwise fit your needs.

Ahhh, just found the info:

SMITH & WESSON MODEL 337 KIT GUN

Caliber: 38 S&W Special +P

Capacity: 5 rounds

Barrel Length: 3.2"

Weight: 11.2 ounces

Grips: Uncle Mike's Boot; Dymondwood Boot

Sights: Black serrated front; fixed notch rear

Misc: Aluminum alloy frame, barrel shroud and yoke; titanium cylinder; stainless steel barrel liner

I couldn't find any pictures. The one I handled seemed like a decent gun.

I carry 5 shot Smith, made 20 or 30 years ago (chief special?). I dont know if they still make them, but you can find almost new hardly fired ones at gun shows. around $200- $250 for a practically new one.

You should define 'lightweight.' A .357 that weighs ~25 oz is pretty light weight for that cartridge.

Here's a few .357's that weight less than 20 oz.

S&W 340
340PD
360, not fixed sight, but does have a 3" bbl.

Ruger doesn't really make anything like an Airweight. Taurus has several .38 revolver models less than 20 oz.

I have a J frame .357 M640, and even with .38's, I'm no good with it. I opted for a K frame .38 3" bbl instead. The recoil with .357's makes the revo useless to me after the first shot. I've considered using a M36 with .38's, but even then I think I'd have to go to combat grips instead of boot grips to hit anything past five feet. I can't imagine firing .357 out of one of the airweight scandium revolvers than S&W manufactures. I think it would be like holding a stun grenade. I'd be interested in something like a J frame M36 w/3" bbl.

I'll tell you something else that's been interesting me lately, and that's revolvers chambered for .32 H&R Magnum. There aren't too many, but the ones that are out there usually go for ~$400.

S&W 432PD
Ruger SP101
Taurus 731, but it's ported

Ballistics almost reach .38 Special levels, but with (purportedly) less recoil.

Also possible would be .32 S&W Long, but only as a BUG. The ballistics for that cartridge aren't much worse than .32 ACP. Slower bullet, but heavier. S&W made a M30 & M31 in that caliber and they occasionally show up used on gunbroker.com and the like.

The neat thing about .32 H&R Mag is 6 shots in out of a J-frame with ballistics pretty close to .38 Spl (not +P).

The bad news is ammo costs are insane and there isn't much factory ammo to choose from. But if you're a reloader, all the better.

People who own 'em say recoil is markedly less than Airweights with .38's, which means more shots on target quicker, so that's a pretty big plus.

LH2, yeah, the cost and lack of availability of .32H&R was holding me back. At least you can use .32S&W Long and .32S&W in revos chambered for .32H&R. While not cheap, it's not outrageous.
