Anybody care to share some plinking loads for the 30-40 Krag? How about cast slugs? I recently acquired an 1898 carbine in good shape,I think it's a hybrid.the receiver sight is marked "c" for carbine but the front band is the screw type that were used on the rifles so I don't think it's much of a collector but I'm sure it's going to be a fun shooter Melvin

150-grain jacketed bullet, 24.0 grains of 2400 gives 2,050 ft/sec at 34,000 psi.

169-grain gas check bullet, 21.7 grains of 2400 gives about 1,930 ft/sec at 34,000 psi.

170-grain .30-30 bullet, 12.4 grains of Unique gives 1,430 ft/sec. Low pressure...

These loads are from Phil Sharpe's "Complete Guide To Handloading". Because of the single locking lug on the bolt, never load over 42,000 psi. 40,000 is better.

Have fun,

Try the Lee Sqib Program

Lee Sqib Program described in their loading manual on pages 90-93 will give you all the loads you can ever want.

Use the "REGULAR" powder and move the load down...

150-gr. lead bullet, 10 to 12 grains of Red Dot.

Tends to be messy, but I've used the same load in my Remington 722 .300 Savage and I've gotten 100 yard groups of 3/4 of an inch.

I've also head shot quite a few squirrels with that load.

I have fired hundreds of cast bullets in my 30-06.I find lyman bullet #311466 to be one of the best in my rifle.Check the lyman reloading handbook it gives loads for that bullet for the 30-40.If you don't cast your own Email me and I will find you the address for the place that I get them. I buy them all sized lubed and gas checked.Send me your mailing address and I will mail you a few to try. It takes some experimenting to get any cast bullet to shoot well I find seating depth to be very importaint.
