light black or gray streaks inside shotgun barrel??

old fart

i just bought a new 12 gauge shotgun, i got it home and put hoppes thru the barrel, let set a few minutes and cleaned out. when i checked the barrel there are streaks inside, it won't come out with hoppes which is all i have and thought maybe a brush? what could this be? and what can i use? it isn't heavy inside, just lightly but runs the entire barrel length. thanks

Either lead or plastic residue. WD-40, Brake Cleaner or any type of solvent works. Put a brush on an old rod and chuck it into a cordless drill and go back and forth a few times, then follow with a patch or two and it should be GTG.

Wet the barrel with #9. Let it soak for a day.

If that doesnt remove it, try some #9 benchrest solvent, it removes plastic.

contacted mossberg, they want the barrel back. i have sent it back to them, i hope my replacement is sent quickly. thanks

i never shot it, was like this out of box. spent most of night trying to clean it, nothing i did worked. i contacted mossberg and they want to look at it.

Hoppes had always taken the plastic residue out of my shotguns without any soaking, just a brush and a few patches.

Odd to have marks like that without having shot the gun. Hope the OP posts what Mossberg says about it..

Proof load, factory, bang, wipe and ship.

#9 evaporate. NO

Regular #9 will not remove plastic build up in a choke tube. After 100s of rounds, chokes will get more constricted. Hard to see, but its there.

I use Hoppes all the time to remove the plastic residue from choke tubes. I take the tubes out and let them soak for at least an hour. Works fine for me. Soak them, follow up with a bronze brush, chase with a patch, and they look like new.

I would just shoot it and if there is anything there that shouldn't be, the shot will take it out. I bought my Mossberg and I have never looked down the barrel, just cleaned it.

got my new barrel today, blueing is very light and the barrel has got a brownish color to it but the inside is nice and clean, also the first barrel rib did not line up center with the receiver. the new barrel went right on and looks great and is in line. got the label so the first barrel is going back, the inside i still can't figure and i'm glad i at least installed the barrel once cause the rib out of alignment would have really bothered me. called mossberg and told them this too and i was told its rare but rib misalignment happens from time to time. the brownish color to the barrel i was told was blueing not taking as well as it should but i'm keeping it as it lines up and is clean inside. thanks
