Life Expectancy of a FAL

Yes, yes...I know...many variables. Lets assume...DSA standard or medium contour, well-cared-for, fed nice ammo...

How many rounds will it last? Whats the best way to keep it ticking?

Should I end up buying two rifles...a 'keeper' and a shooter? I ask since I can see the day coming when I wont be able to just go down to my local FFL and plunk down money and buy one, and I like to shoot a lot....it helps one be proficient.

PS And yes...I *am* saving up for a DSA. Almost there...about 1 month more should do it :D

How much ammo can you afford? Unless you run 20 round mags through the gun and get it red hot, expect a barrel life expectancy of about 30,000 rounds. The reciever will probably go double or triple that.

just be kind to your receiver, the ban on imported parts won't affect your gun as dsa parts are of domestic manufacture. if your worried, ask dsa about a spare parts kit.

Unless you've got a whole pile of money to spend on ammo, you'll be willing the gun to one of your kids.

Well my L1A1 was manufactured by lithgow in 1962 and spent the years between then and 1988 (when I bought it) in service with the New Zealand Army.

This rifle has served me for the last 12 years faultlessly, I shoot it about twice a month and have lost track of the ammo I have fired though it. (I hate to imagine the number of rounds it fired through it in 28 years of army service.)

The rifle is sound and still fairly accurate. Then again I don't really test it the hardest target I shoot is 10" steel disks at 300 Metres or so and it will do this all day long.

Look at FN FAL's on the TV in war zones, ask yourself old those guns are, their treatment, how many rounds they have fired and they seems to work just fine.

You will never give your own guns the kind of abuse that armed forces give theirs, Even a shooter you will be willing to your children.
