Sen. Lieberman: Where He Stands

By The Associated Press

Democratic Sen. Joseph Lieberman, Al Gore's running mate, on policy issues:

ABORTION:

--Shares Gore's support for abortion rights; voted against banning procedure known by its opponents as partial-birth abortion.

--Has supported requiring minors to have parental consent before having abortions at federally subsidized clinics.

CAMPAIGN FINANCE:

--In an addendum to a Senate report on fund-raising irregularities, accused President Clinton and Gore of using ''the
White House as a marketing tool.''

--Backed a defeated constitutional amendment to allow Congress to limit contributions and spending by and for
candidates for federal office.

CIVIL RIGHTS:

--Voted to make it easier to sue employers for discrimination and to allow women, religious minorities and the disabled
to win damages for intentional discrimination.

--Voted to expand the definition of hate crimes to include crimes committed because of the victims' sex, sexual orientation or disability.

--In 1994 crime bill, opposed letting prisoners on death row appeal using argument that sentencing statistics show they
were victims of racial discrimination.

CRIME:

--Backed anti-crime legislation pushed by Clinton, including mandatory sentences for crimes involving firearms.

--Switched to favoring the death penalty from being against it early in career.

CULTURAL VALUES:

--An author of the law that required TVs to have a V-chip to help parents monitor children's viewing. Pressed makers
of video games to label violent games.

--Supported National Endowment for the Arts.

--Voted last year to assert that erecting religious symbols and praying on public school campuses as part of a memorial
service is constitutional.

--A critic of Hollywood violence and sex, teamed up with conservative William Bennett to hand out ''Silver Sewer''
awards to ''cultural polluters.'' Recipients have included radio host Howard Stern, CBS' ''60 Minutes'' and the Fox
Television Network.

DEFENSE:

--Has sided with Republicans in supporting early deployment of national missile defense system.

--Supported Persian Gulf War.

--Voted against requiring separate housing and platoons for male and female recruits in basic training.

EDUCATION:

--Championed experimental voucher programs, letting parents use federal money to send children to public or private
schools of their choice. Gore says vouchers would undermine public education.

--More recently, backed education changes that do not include vouchers.

--Voted to expand tax-free education savings accounts to help parents cover education expenses in all grades and at
public and private schools -- an idea promoted by Republican presidential candidate George W. Bush.

--In line with Gore, voted to spend more on teacher training and fixing school buildings.

ENVIRONMENT:

--League of Conservation Voters gave him 100 percent approval rating for eight of the last 11 years, based on his votes
on environmental issues.

--Co-sponsored 1990 Clean Air Act, introduced legislation in 1991 to give consumers more information about the dangers of pesticides, and has championed the need to address global warming.

FLAG:

--Voted against constitutional amendment to outlaw desecration of the flag.

FOREIGN POLICY:

--Backs Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty.

--Voted for United States to pay arrears to United Nations without setting conditions in law.

--Opposed Clinton's clemency to members of a Puerto Rican independence group.

GAY RIGHTS:

--Sponsored legislation to prohibit employment discrimination against gays.

--Saying ''society should not be promoting the homosexual lifestyle,'' backed 1994 bill to deny federal money to schools
presenting material ''supportive of homosexuality.''

--Voted to prohibit same-sex marriage in federal law, and provide that no state is required to recognize same-sex
marriages performed in other states.

GUN CONTROL:

--Backed mandatory child safety locks.

--Backed five-day waiting period for handgun purchases and ban on semiautomatic assault-type weapons.

HEALTH CARE:

--Opposed the Clinton universal health care plan in favor of a more limited plan proposed by insurance companies,
which are major financial supporters of his campaigns.

--Sought bipartisan agreement on rival plans to increase rights for consumers in HMOs and other health plans.

IMPEACHMENT:

--A leading Democratic critic of Clinton's behavior, but voted ''not guilty'' on articles of impeachment.

LEGAL REFORM:

--One of only four Senate Democrats to side with Republicans in 1995 in voting to limit punitive damage awards in
product liability cases.

SOCIAL SECURITY:

--Has spoken in favor of partially privatizing Social Security, as proposed by Bush and opposed by Gore. Told The San
Diego Union-Tribune in 1998: ''A remarkable wave of innovative thinking is advancing the concept of privatization. ... I
think in the end that individual control of part of the retirement-Social Security funds has to happen.''

TAXES:

--Supported 1993 increases in the gasoline tax and taxes on the wealthy, after winning support for cuts in capital-gains
taxes for investors in some new small businesses.

--Voted to raise the limit on income exempt from the estate tax but not to eliminate the tax.

--Backed Democratic plan to reduce tax penalty on married couples instead of more aggressive GOP plan.

--Supported increasing tobacco tax to help pay for prescription drug program.

TRADE:

--Shares Gore's support for liberalized trade and normalizing trade relations with China.

I know we'll still hear from many that we have no choice in this election, but IMHO, the Gore / Lieberman ticket is a different cup of tea compared to Bush / Cheney.

And, I hope the Republicans don't screw us on the RKBA. [yea, I know ... but really ... I don't believe in Santa Claus ;) ]

Live and let live. Regards from AZ

I think it's interesting that Gore picked someone who was critical of Slick Willy (although Lieberman voted against impeachment) and is more conservative than he is on some issues. Does Gore think this makes him more appealing to convervatives?!? How will Gore distance himself from Clinton's past criminal acts during the coming campaign?

It is as if Gore is implicitly acknowledging the power the conservative vote will wield in this year's election. To me, it sounds like Lieberman has a limited ability to think for himslef, which he loses whenever the Democratic Party reminds him of his obligations to them.

Algore will use Lieberman to distance them (team approach again) from what is negative about Clinton, while at the same time taking credit for what is percieved as positive about this administration. ie having it both ways.
remember this: no matter what we would like to think or who we would proudly vote for , Algore or Bush will be the next pres- no one else. We might get screwed either way. But it's guaranteed by Algore, and a maybe/ maybe not with Bush. I'm going to take my chances with Bush/Cheney and let them know why I vote the way I do, and what I expect. If they jack us on RKBA, we won't forget it.

Leddbetter: Even in his attack on Clinton, Lieberman stuck by the party line that it was all about sex, rather than facing up to the perjury and obstruction of justice. Then he voted to aquit.

He's got a 0, yes, zip, zero, nada, American Conservative Union rating, and a 95 from Americans for Democratic Action. Aside from being a hawk who favors school choice, he's a straight line hard leftist. This is the most "liberal" Democratic ticket for President since McGovern, maybe ever.

hube, check my signature line.

One interesting aspect of the Lieberman choice that I was anticipating came to fruition last night. On all of the news shows, the focus was on his religion rather than his record. He'll give Gore a little more distance from Clinton, but not much. But the media will call anybody who attacks him an antisemite. They started with that last night by saying that anyone who would object to his being Jewish wouldn't be a Gore supporter anyway. An off-handed way of saying that conservatives are racists. Clinton/Gore/Hillary have been trying to exploit race in this election for almost a year. This is just an extension of that strategy. Bush and Cheney's folks will have to speak very softly when they criticize Lieberman's liberal record, or they'll be called the equivalent of Nazis.

If you thought the Bob Jones/Catholic issue was ugly, wait 'till you hear the spin on the religious right/Jewish issue.

right you are, monkeyleg
they figure Lieberman is untouchable. also allows Algore some degree of moral cleansing. question: If Leiberman is such a great moral and righteous guy, what is he doing associating himself with Algore? He went from calling for an investigation of Algore's fundraising tricks to tearful prayer and total support for an Algore victory.

I am an orthodox jew and Lieberman isn't. My jewish friends are not going to be voting for him, and niether am I. He is pro-choice, where abortion is against our religion. The main thing people are saying is lieberman is being used for his "clean" image and he doesn't get it. Most commie jews vote democrat anyways. Last time I checked it was about 80-85% so big deal he might get another 5 or 10% and the jews make up about 1 or 2% of the population or about 5% of the voting population. I am part of that 5% and my vote will be for W!

Hoosierboy: He didn't do it to get the Jewish vote; As related above, he did it so that anyone who attacked his VP pick could be labeled an anti-semite. Also to throw the Republicans off ballance; While the Democrats like Lieberman because he votes liberal, the Republicans like him, too... because he talks conservative before he votes. Not to bright, are they?

First, I think the Democrats engineered the impeachment sceanrio of Lieberman coming out to the tee and it is very possible that Lieberman was chosen by Gore long before it became public. Don't think that the Dems did'nt factor in the 200 election during the impeachment hearings.

Second, Liberman should be judged by what he does and not what he says. How can "Mr. Morality" vote for a procedure like late term abortion? How could he not vote for impeachment last year?

Finally, I do not have proof but there has always been a suspicion that deceased Oil Man, Communist and former backer of Al Gore, Sr., Armand Hammer gave Gore, Sr. confiscated art work taken from the Jews by the Nazi's during the holocaust. Does this mean Gore will be giving it back?

The fact that Lieberman will be expected to campaign in support of Hillary's run for the U.S. Senate seat in NY leads me to conclude that "Bill & Hill" had something to say about Algore's pick! A lot of Jewish voters in New York who are disgusted with Hillary and might have stayed home on November 7, may now vote for the "Gore team" and may just pull the Democratic lever instead of splitting their ballot (a vote for Gore/Lieberman becomes a vote for Hillary). Jewish folks may be a small % in the U.S. overall but they are not a small % of the New York voter base.

How can Lieberman even stand next to Gore with a straight face. Not only was Lieberman harsh on Clinton but also on Gore's fundraising schemes...

How can Gore distance himself from Clinton... he's been right there the entire time, he's just as bad as Clinton, a negative time's a postive is still negative. Gore's only chance is massive negative attacks, plus to many sheeple voting. But I think people are starting to wake up and they dont like what they see.

Sure the economy is OK, but it sure is fragile. Government is still to big. They take away to much in taxes. They try to take away our civil rights. VOTE them ALL out and have a revolution.

While I dont think Bush is the saviour I think he will do a damn good job at shaping this country up. Up for defense, down on real criminals, up for our liberties, give us a smaller/leaner meaner government.

Give us back our money and get your hands off them guns...

Those are my issues. VOTE

peace...
