Jewish Court Excommunicates Lieberman
By Bob Melvin
CNS Evening Editor
October 23, 2000

(CNSNews.com) - The New York Torah Court - Beth Din announced Monday that, after careful deliberation, it has excommunicated Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman, the Democratic vice presidential hopeful on Al Gore's ticket.

The court stated that Senator Lieberman caused grave scandal for the Jewish religion "by the fact that, while claiming to be an observant Jew, Lieberman has been misrepresenting and falsifying to the American people the teachings of the Torah against partial birth infanticide, against special privileges and preferential treatment for flaunting homosexuals, and against religious intermarriage of Jews."

Rabbi Joseph Friedman, a spokesman for the rabbinical court, said that Lieberman also has "flagrantly violated our sacred Torah by his Senate votes upholding partial birth infanticide and legitimizing homosexuality, which abnormal and unhealthy behavior the Torah strongly condemns as sinful and immoral.

"Mr. Lieberman, moreover, has, in violation of the Torah, supported harmful gender integration in the US Armed Forces - in the barracks, on naval warships, and in combat training - all of which weakens and demoralizes our Armed Forces," he added.

Rabbi Friedman also declared that, "under excommunication...the person being excommunicated still remains a Jew. We hope that the senator repents and asks (God's) forgiveness so that the excommunication may be lifted."

Rabbi Friedman stated that there are historical precedents for rabbinical excommunication of public figures as well as private individuals. However, those precedents have been few and far between. In 1945, Rabbi Mordecai M Kaplan was excommunicated for grave violations of the Torah. That excommunication was reported in the New York Times and other newspapers and publications.

The Gore-Lieberman 2000 Campaign Headquarters' press office in Nashville had no immediate response to the excommunication.

Honest ... I have no idea what to think of this event. Is this Court credible? Do / will Jews really care? For that matter, will anyone really care?

Not trying to be disrespectful at all ... I'm simply ignorant of this Court, and this sounds like it could be interesting news, but with no real import.

Thanks. Regards from AZ

Mayhap it will induce uninvolved but observant Jews to vote against him and his party. I think it can only help Bush.

Nikita Khrushchev predicted confidently in a speech in Bucharest, Rumania on June 19, 1962 that: " The United States will eventually fly the Communist Red Flag...the American people will hoist it themselves."

Again...C.R.Sam with the goods! The Gore Lieberman ticket certainly has been painted with the "say anything to get elected" brush. How can they have any credibility?

But then as I recall, Clinton/Gore promised the most ethical administration ever.

And Gore picked him because...????

There is no global authority in the Jewish faith.

No official positions on abortion and homosexuality. Just a political move by a group of Jews.

It will have no impact on Jewish voters.

In fact, those positions are reasons to vote for the guy except that he is running with Gore and not good on the RKBA.

Is this appropriate as it isn't a gun thread but the good old abortion/gay thread again?

ALERT: Torah Court Excommunicates Prominent National Figure --
Must Read

To all JPFO members and supporters,

Only rarely does a Torah Court (Beth Din) excommunicate a
prominent public figure. Yet that is what occurred on October
18, 2000, when such an Orthodox Rabbinical Court declared that
a nationally-known public figure "flagrantly violated our sacred
Torah" by his words and deeds.

To avoid political entanglements, JPFO does not involve itself
with discussion of this particular public figure.

Get the shocking full story at the Conservative News Service, www.cnsnews.com, news for October 23, 2000. Click on:

and paste the two lines into your web browser.)

Please forward this information to all Jews and to any others
who have an interest in this public figure.

As an orthodox jew, I don't think it will mean much anyways. Only the orthodox jews will even take it into consideration. I would say about 80% of the orthodox jews will be voting for bush, including me and about 95% of my congregation. Lieberman is not what I would call an orthodox jew. We don't believe in gay marriage, and we are not pro-choice. He is, which is one reason I wont be voting for him.

Most jews also take into consideration who is going to be more friendly towards israel. I am not for U.S. troops going over there, but I think the U.S. should help financially, and I will tell you why. It is a win win situation for both. Israel gets new technology in the form of new weapons, and the U.S. get to see how it holds up in actual battle. Call Israel the guniea pigs, if you will. That is the bottom line and that is why with hillary and lazio people in NY are holding out to see where each one stands, as israel is almost 99% heading for war.

Jews do Have "Views" on the trash Liberman is putting out... Its caled the Torah ( The law as given at Sinai). Homosexuality is called a "Toava" ( abomination!!). Partial birth abortions have NO medical value ( the child is essentialy born) and are strictly forbidden. Inter-marrage with non-converted peoples is also a big "no-no". All of these items are things that liberman has embraced for political gain.

This small and lonely "BEIT-DIN" ( lit. house of judgement) does have legal right within strict Jewish law to excommunicate individuals in order to cause them to repent AND make sure others do not repeat this mistake/s.

THIS BAN IS VALID AND SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN LIGHTLY BY ANY JEW OR RIGHTOUS NON-JEWS.

Jaydee,
Thank you for beeng the first to inform us of this ban ( not that I was going to vote for him anyways)
. Now I can call my teachers and freinds and tell them where I found this info! :)

If I read this correctly Joe is being EX-COMMUNICATED from the jewish church because he is advocating the DEMOCRATIC 2000 platform.

No one organization can remove Jews from the faith. If a small groups claims they can, goody for them. If you want to believe it, good for you.

This a purely political move based on one agenda. If you are a jew and thing, you personally or your rabbi has the one true word - good for you again. There is no overarching legal authority.

Some sects try to define what a jew is. But
it hasn't worked.

These kinds of pompous ravings do no good for the RKBA. Also, the more you use the abortion and gay issues - the more the RKBA becomes alienated from most Americans.

Are people so stupid to not toe realized this?

This board is full of this crap and commandos who want to turn the country into a revolutionary, terrorist.

That's why the 70 million aren't strident, they see too many nutcases.

Disgusted.

EnochGale,
While RKBA is very important to those of us on TFL, it is not the most important thing to many of us. I applaud the ex-communication and it was the right thing to do. If the Jews (I am referring to those who practice Judaism)truly believe the Holy Scriptures they can't do anything else. Abortion is clearly murder and homosexuality is so clearly condemned by God that one can only misunderstand if he is determined to misunderstand. I would give up RKBA to save the lives of the millions of unborn infants who have been and will be murdered, and to stop the spread of the notion that homosexuality is just an alternate lifestyle. I may vote for RKBA with others, but I have nothing in common with anyone who supports abortion or homosexuality. No, I am not tolerant of sin and wrongdoing or those who practice or support such. Anyone who votes for Gore is guilty to some degree for every murder of the unborn and every step forward for homosexuality. A reprobate nation can expect nothing but judgement in God's due time. Jerry

First - he is not excommunicated because that global power does not exist. Get this straight. A bunch of folks did this for political reasons. They are not all of Judaism.

As far as the abortion issue and gay rights - that again is an intepretation.

Jerry - good for you - I would vote against a
candidate who is a bigot and had a reasonable chance to take away a women's right to choose even if he or she was RKBA.

In fact, it is good that such a person supports the RKBA because we would have to start the so-called REVOLUTION if he got elected. We would have to protect the rights of minorities and women from such a monster.

Again, I tell you that supporting the RKBA is independent of these issues and to link them is to lose most folk.

We are seen as bigots, racists and misogynists who want to play commando.

Don't feed the stereotype.

Thank you to all members who participated in this thread and kept the discussion civil. Unfortunately this thread has veered to become mainly a religious topic rather than a political one.

To paraphrase JPFO: "TFL does not involve itself with discussion of this particular subject."

Closed.
