Liberator pistol question

So a shooting buddy and I were talking about the Liberator pistol from WW2 and both of us are fans of WW2 era firearms and we were talking about how it would be a cool conversation piece to own. Anyways, our question is that seeing as it's a C&R nowadays, would it still have to be registered as an AOW due to it being a smoothbore pistol? We ask because we are in CA and all NFA items are banned here. :(

I heard those things hurt to shoot, and when they fail, it's catastrophic. Might be fun to own one though. BATF should have a list, and it should be listed as an AOW, if it is one.

ATF

An original Liberator pistol would be on the exempt list at the federal level, you would need to check with CA DOJ to see if it would be exempt from any CA state or local laws.

If a reproduction were produced it would then be an AOW because of the smooth bore.

I know a guy that owns two of them.

I tried to weasel my way into shooting one but it went nowhere. I am not friends with the guy, but one of my friends is. He asked my buddy to handload some light loads for him to shoot out of the Liberator. I said, oh I got some light loads we could use, give him a call. But alas, I never heard any more about it.

From what I have been told by someone that owns one, they are inaccurate. The bullet is just as likely to key hole as strike straight on. They aren't really any fun to shoot.

The "Liberator" was designed for one purpose only and that was to kill a enemy soldier and "liberate" his weapon. They were not intended to be combat weapons so accuracy was not a factor. There small size would permit a person to come up on a target and shot it at almost contact distance. Thousands of these guns were dropped but how many were actually used is unknown. Personally I would not shoot one even with reduced loads as they are a poor design and questionable quality.

Biil is right, check this place out. And $600 beats the heck out of what you pay for an original.

$600 is a bit steep! I could make jigs and buy tooling, along with buying a few rifled barrel blanks, for less than that. Heck, if I "paid" myself $50/hr I could still probably bring it in under $600.

The packaging, however! :D

There are many myths about the Liberator pistols, but the fact seems to be that none were ever dropped to anyone in Europe. Hundreds of thousands were sent to England but were not used and were eventually dumped in the ocean. Many went to the Pacific area, and a few went to the Philippines and China; a very few might have been used against the Japanese. Some were used by the Philippine police after WWII until they could get better weapons. The bulk met the same fate as those in Europe, destroyed as not worth the cost of sending home.

The whole thing was one of those wartime ideas that sounded good but was actually silly. It was based on a novel, The Moon Is Down, by John Steinbeck, about an armed populace rising against the conqueror. It made great reading but it is not in the nature of most folks to start killing enemy soldiers even if a gun is available. In occupied countries, a few people will fight, but the majority will just keep their heads down and hope no one bothers them.

Further, the idea seems to have been to drop the pistols without parachutes, which should have made some odd shaped holes in roofs or people's heads. Much more effective weapons were dropped, by parachute, to resistance forces. By any reasonable measure a STEN is a better weapon than a Liberator.

Responsibility for the pistols was passed around among allied commanders with a "you take them, no you take them" attitude. In fact no one could think of a reasonable need or any use to which they could be put. And of course, the .45 ACP would have been unobtainable in Europe, so once the ten rounds in the pistol were gone, it was trash.

A neat and valuable collector's item, made scarce because the vast majority were destroyed, but without any real combat history.

Jim

I remember seeing one of these at a gun show, i cant remember the exact price but im almost positive it was in the thousands for an original.
600 doesnt sound too bad for a repro
