Unless respect for the rights of D.C. residents to make their own laws...
I agree with this sentiment wholeheartedly. It really bothers me when representatives vote on bills when they have absolutely no bearing or consequence on them or their constituents. If the voters of Washington DC want to enact 'sensible and broadly supported gun safety' laws, let them do it.

Why should a congressman from Indiana have any say in that decision whatsoever?

Because he has to work in DC. Therefore he has a stake in the local laws.
I have seen the argument that if your place of employment is a criminal safety zone (ie weapon free) then you should either stealthly disregard or find a new place of employment.

What are your thoughts on that?

If I remember correctly, Washington DC is a special governmental zone where the congress actually has a big hand in administering. It's not legally part of any state, for example.

Rebar is correct. To be quite honest, D.C. couldn't exist without the huge federal funding of the city. There was never supposed to be more than a care-taker population in D.C. The civil government there is an abberation, at best. They routinely mismanage billions of dollars every year. If all of the police forces of D.C. were to stand shoulder-to-shoulder, they'd be about 30' apart on every street and alley in the city. Yet, crime is rampant.

Consider, the Secret Service patrols the White House, The Blair House, and Embassy Row. The Capital Police patrol federal property and buildings such as the Senate and House buildings. The Park Police patrol all of the federal parks, including the mall. The GPO police patrol their warehouses and areas. The Mint has it's own security, Ft. McNair, and the Marine Barracks are patrolled by the MP forces, there is also a government police force for various warehouses and other buildings. The FBI has several buildings in D.C. that are theirs to patrol, and the Post Office has both Postal Police, and Postal Inspectors.

Now, take away all of these areas patrolled by the various federal agencies, and add in the DCMetro Police, a force of several thousand. Take out the subways and parking areas, as they are patrolled by the Transit Authority. All of D.C. consists of 64 sq. miles. You do the math.

The D.C. government has a coy way to play this. Whenever they screw the pooch, they ask, and then blame, the Congress for their problems. It wasn't the voters who got the gun bans in D.C., it was the anti-gun Congress, and the Washington Post.:barf:

Its nice you didnt say Democrats and said Liberal Democrats. Your one of the first that ive seen here thats used the proper term. The two are different you know :P.

When the country was founded, D.C. was a swamp that no sane person would want to live in. It's under legislative control of Congress because it was expected that only federal governmental entities and employees would be located there.

It's a federal district, and anyone who plans to live there long-term is insane. If I had to work in D.C., I'd live in Virginia.
