I was at my local arms merchant today and he had several classic smiths in the case

one the intruiged me was a lew horton special .44mag, wood grips and about a 3-3.5" bbl

it had a hammer mounted firing pin and had a nicely tuned action. very smooth double action pull and a crisp single action

it was by no means mint but in good shape

it was priced at 499. this dealers used prices are usually very reasonable and am curious if this was a good price and any opinions on this gun.

didn't have time to chat with the owner on this one but it has piqued my interest

i have never shot a .44mag with less than a 7.5" bbl.

Lew Horton had a run of 200 3" 29-3's made @ 85. The price is too high based on your description of "good shape". IMO, for that much money, it would have to be in excellent or better condition, have the box, tools and all paperwork that came with it. Shooting full house 240 grain loads is unpleasant. Most 44 Spl loads aren't bad at all and 175 grain Silvertips are downright fun.

I agree, the price is too high for the condition that you
stated. Compare it to the other "Smith Classics" that
are in the showcase; and you will discover that the
said dealer is taking advantage of having a slightly
used Lew Horton special production firearm! :( :D
