lever action shotgun?

I've found a couple lever action guns that have peaked my interest (at pawn shops/on consignment/used), can't remember the model or brand, I think winchester. would a lever action have any practical purposes, depending on barrel length etc... or are they outdated, hard to find parts for etc...

At my collectors club

One of the guys bought in a Winchester lever shottie, (this one was quite old) was very nice. The mechanism was a bit clunky due to the size of the shells, the one he bought in fired full brass cases.... I love the idea of the lever action, I presume more modern & replicas would be quite good, would have the 'bugs' ironed out.

You would have to find the exact brand & model and ask people who own them to see if they are a good shooting proposition, or just a novelty... before you lay out the cash... just in case you get stuck with something that has and never will function effectively.

I like the isea tho, love leverguns.... I have a Marlin 23" cowboy 44 mag & Win Little Big horn, in 44-40 :D

Ithaca also made a lever action styled single shot shotgun. The 1894 style lever was used to unlock the breach of this break open single.

IIRC, Winchester made a lever 410 not that long ago - used to scare the trap help because they thought he was going to use a 30-30 to shoot skeet.....:D

He loved it for dove as much as his 410 pump

You're right, Winchester did make a .410 lever before their demise. Marlin still makes one. In fact, a friend and I were at Cabela's yesterday and he bought one of the Marlins. He has a lot of squirrels on his property and he intends to use it for that (actually, I think he just wanted something a little "different" :)). $499 + tax, I think.

Practical - not in my mind .....compared to a number of modern designs.

I still have a bolt action 16ga - its fun to shoot too once in a while ....but it isn't practical for most applications.

I have an Interstate replica of the 87 Winchester lever gun
its got a tuning on it from another CAS shooter
I think its great.

I copied these photos from the Gunbroker.com site. One of my childhood hunting companions had one just like this in 20 gauge with modified choke. He had very good luck with it. I shot it several times and liked it.

The Ithaca model 66 faded from production in late 1970's but good used ones are not terribly difficult to find. It was a very well built single shot that is unique and interesting, plus it points and balances well.
