Lever action: Riot scenario - disadvantaged?

Here is the scenario. You live in a major urban area. Rioting has been going on for several days. Houses are burning, stores are being looted, and people are starting to go house to house for food. You can't bug out because of roadblocks and the fact that bugging out is a bad idea due to the fact you have no where to go. It is better to sit tight and not become a refugee.

All you have is a lever action .44 carbine. You know how to use it. From a weapons standpoint, how disadvantaged would you feel? You plan to shoot one, load one. You have bandlideers and plenty of ammo. Does the magazine fed .223 or .308 dramatically increase your chances of survival assuming good tactics and strategy.

P.S.

A discussion of tactics and strategy is a separate issue.

According to your statement, I think you'd have a good advantage with the carbine. Short, handy, able to handle different loads, and powerful.

Maybe put a laser below the barrel, for those low light or from the hip shots? And a Tang sight for the occasional longish shots?
I wouldnt try to scope it for the urban senario you describe.

Maybe not against single opponents...

But I think I would MUCH prefer a shorty AR15 with 30rnd mags. Its just as light weight, if not more so, and you basically trigger off multiple rounds in a second, assuring VERY quick reaquiring for a missed target or for a second BG. Plus, even a moderate barrel length .223 (say 18-20") will get you good accuracy out to 300m. Finally, .223 ammo may be more readily availible form LE or military sources.

FWIW, IMHO, YMMV, and all that...

wouldn't be my FIRST choice (I'd go with a high-cap .223 semi carbine as well, I think, though likely not an AR). That said, a Chevy will get you across the country just like a Porsche will, and if that's what ya got, I'd not feel too disadvantaged with it. I think in most cases, unless you're LEO or Nat Guard, you wouldn't be likely to be heading INTO trouble, but rather backing off from it. A .44 lever seems more than adequate in a "Don't $#% with me" role.

Finally.. I don't think riots are a real likely occurance in this situation. We seem pretty darn united, and I expect we'll stay that way for the duration.

given a choice, FAL, but you ain't seen my wife use a Leaver... (SASS Shooter), pump shot gun is probably best for those case you describe. (that big tube is down right discouraging)

Just off the top of my head, it's lacking in a couple of areas:

1) Anti-vehicle support. A .308 will punch through a couple of car doors better than a .44, and it'll give you more rounds when you're shooting through an opaque target (car, door, etc). Better chance of disabling a car as well.
2) Lack of suppressive capability. Remember "cover me while I move!/I've got you covered" in Basic/AIT? There's something to be said for 30 rounds of .223 to make opponents duck while your friends move from position to position.

Not that you couldn't plan around this, but it seems to me that you're limiting your options. I'd be inclined to band together with like-minded people and try and defend at natural choke-points, as defending one house on a block seems like a good invitation for a moltov cocktail.

But we'll leave tactics out of it. A .44 lever action is lacking in penetration and firepower when compared to an M1A/FAL/HK91/HK93/AR15/AK47, which (should the SHTF) may be enough to get you killed unless you figure your way around those weaknesses.

At least IMHO. But then, I've never lived through the S h'ing the F.

A while ago, I asked folks here what they thought of a 44 Magnum for battle. I had a Ruger semi-auto in mind, but I would equally trust a lever action. The thing I really like about lever action rifles is how the loading gate works. You can top off your magazine (tactical reload) without dropping a detatchable magazine and handicapping your rifle.

My personall opinion is that I would rather dump the gun and be able to run faster. I'd rather bet my life on getting out of a sticky situation in a stealthy way than risking a stand-off with a lever action. I think I'll keep my AK for that. If I had the money I'd rather get an AR. .308 aussalt weapons are very cool but more firepower than needed and a little heavy. An AR is very tactical, compact and full of ammo. So is the AK - maybe even better if it's an urban environment. Dunno. .223 would be good enough. A shotgun or hand gun would be good too if you're a good shot and up against unarmored thugs. However, I think I would sh!t my pants if I had a lever action in said senario.
