Lever Action Reloading

Hey Folks, I've recently acquired a lever action 44mag by Rossi. I noticed first trip to the range that it quite nicely burred up the edges of the catridges. Not knowing myself I'm seeking advice from you all. Is it normal for the opening of the catridge to show this abuse? A friend much more knowledgable about firearms said He'd heard this was the case w/ lever actions and I should just plan on being unable to reload shells I've shot through the lever action. HELP?!?!?:(

No, that is not normal for a lever gun. I have several Winchesters that do not mark the brass in any way. There has to be a burr somewhere. Tell us exactly what part of the cases are getting chewed on and maybe we can help. You may need to find a gunsmith who does work on cowboy style guns. I have a Winchester 94 in .44 mag. that I love to death. They are fun practical weapons.

I have a Puma 92 in .45 Colt and it treats my brass pretty good!
It does scratch the side of the case a little when Im loading the gun, maybe theirs a sharp edge but not enough for me to worry about.

try working the lever a bit easier
the extractor is marking the rim, yes? two marks the width of the extractor apart and one of them [ likely the upper one] is worse than the other?
a touch of a fine file will help also.

you can reuse the cases also: touch them up with the file also.

more common with semi autos and seldom takes more than 10 seconds with a file to fix. if you dont have the correct file or are unsure where to use it, let a professional help.

good luck.

Burrs

It appears the burrs are being pushed into the opening of the case. The rims look fine. No apparent marks from the extractor. Thanks a bunch for the feedback, folks. I'd really love to be able to shoot catridges more than once through this gun.:)

cases

Sir;
I have a Uberti Winchester 73 clone that when we got it in chambering the round the front on the case caught on the non-debured edge of the chamber upon entrance. Chamfering that edge very slightly solved the problem. That could be your trouble!
