leupold VX1 poi problems

hello all,
I recently replaced the red dot on my 9mm AR15 with a VX1 1-4x20 and am having problems.

I tried sighting it in at 4x for about 45 yards and it seemed to be doing fine at that range but when I try shooting the same target at 1x at the same distance I'm not even hitting paper. moving back up to 4x I can hit the target again so I'm a bit puzzled. does anyone else have issues with point of impact changing with zoom on their leupolds?

If changing from 4x to 1x makes you miss the whole paper at 45 yards, you've got SERIOUS issues.

It's almost hard for me to imagine that something inside the scope could be that bad so I'd first suspect mounting issues and/or looseness somewhere.

If everything is solid, that scope must be screwed up BAD.

I checked the mounts and everything was still tight so I dont really know what would cause it either. I was shooting prone and using sandbags so I'm about 97% certain that the problem doesn't lie behind the rifle. the same rifle was hitting pop cans at 75 yards with the red dot so I'm certain it's not the rifle... so far I'm just really not that impressed with that scope.

Leupold makes one of the finest scopes in the wrold. Send it back to Leupold and they will repair it. They have a life time warranty and their turn around time is only several days.

I have a 2 1/2 x 8 Leupold handgun scope that does that now. I bought it use and it the only Leupold I ever bought that was bad. I do have a 24X target scope that needs repaired, but I dropped a 16 1/2 lb gun and it landed on the bell of the scope. I`ve owned over 50 Leupolds scope in my life and have around 40 of them on hand now, haven`t bought any other brand for years.

I've never had that problem, but every VX-I that I've used, has failed to hold zero on me after some use. My 2 friends that have also tried VX-I's have also had them fail on them in the same way. One after a couple of years, and the other right away. I'm not impressed with them at all, and they are anything but a "fine" scope. Why people keep buying these things is beyond me.

If I was going to buy a Leupold, it would be a VX-II at minimum, and even then, you can get a lot better scope for a lot less money somewhere else.

That all said, this problem does really seem odd. I wouldn't be surprised at all to hear about a small POI change, but it seems like if it's changing that much, something is seriously wrong. If you put the rifle in a vise, or similar can and have someone turn the magnification ring while you look through it, can you see the crosshairs moving large amounts? I'd send it into Leupold and have them fix it. At least their customer service is decent.

My vx-1 4x12 just got back from factory service, they replaced the friction adjustments with 1/4 min click adjustments - initil problem was not holding zero, 18 day turn around time, send the scope back to them,,,,,,
meanwhile I have a new Nikon 4.5x14 on the rifle i took the Leupold off of.
