Leupold M8-4X EER on pistol

Does anyone have one of these scopes, the extended eye relief, specifically?

I am looking at a used item and it seems they have been out of production for a good while. I can't tell if Leupold is still supporting them or only upgrading. I also can't seem to find what the discount is on a Leupold scope they offer as a replacement upgrade. I have read"cost," but no idea what their mark-up is on a scope. I won't be able to box check it before buying.
 
The replacement is the FX-II 4x28 at $440 retail. Midwayusa has them for $350 (black) and $400 (silver) and free shipping. I had the older version (M8-4X EER) and remember paying around $270 for it new, many years ago.

I have one.It works fine.

Application is a 14 in bbl MOA Maximum single shot in .260 Rem.

In a corrupted semi-Creedmore position,sitting,leaning back on my left elbow,semi-reclined,right knee up,handgun resing on my knee,Hitting a clay bird at 200 yds can be done with confidence.

For me,shooting this handgun free hand standing is not real practical.Its bull barreled.Too muzzle heavy.

If I had it on a stand up handgun,I might prefer 2 1/2 X. I think it would be more forgiving.Shooting from support or rest,I like the 4x.

I bought mine long ago,used,for $75. No need for service,yet.
 
Leupold M8

I have an M8 2x on my .44 mag Super Blackhawk and it has held up to many 300 and 320 gr handloads.

I like the M8 series but I agree that $200 is about $50 too high.
 
I just put an M8 2X on a Ruger SRH and I'm not entirely happy with it. I haven't shot it yet but the view through it doesn't seem right. It does not say EER on it anywhere but it is clearly not a normal rifle scope. FWIW - I paid $110 for it.

I don't know anything about eye relief but it seems that this scope would be better as a scout scope. If you bring it close to your eye, the view is really good at about 12 inches. Further out than that and you're not seeing the ends of the crosshairs. The edges of the FOV also look very distorted, like a fish-eye lens.

Is it because this isn't really a pistol scope or is this normal? Does eye relief have a min and max or just a minimum?

Locked: It mighr very well be an intermediate eye relief scout scope.Leupold made them,though IIRC they are 2.75 X

What MAY be going on,the eyepiece focus could be cranked way off.You might try re-doing that at the desired eye relief...if it is a EER scope vs a IER.
 
I have one of the 2x EER's. Works just fine. I picked it up for $100 at a sporting goods store that had them seriously on sale. Wish I would have purchased several at the time.

Most people I have talked to before I got a handgun scope was get a good one with as much eye relief as possible and low magnification. It is a sighting aid, not intended to scope ground hogs at 300 yds. I still agree with that advice.
 
I've been using the regular M8 4X Compact on a .44 Mag. carbine for years. Also using a Leupold 2X EER on a little Remington 350 Magnum bolt action carbine. Both have been trouble free, even though recoil with the .350 is a bit stout, to say the least.

Putting a scope mount on my Encore barrel is going to be tricky, especially considering my timeframe. Goig to use a normal scope this year. Probably better. If it shoots well I can drop the money on a full length rail and work with it next year.
I can see why, but found it odd alll the Picatinny style one piece scope bases seem to be for AR only with riser making them worthless on a normal rifle.
Hard for me to understand why people don't prefer picatinny to weaver for most rifles when it works so well on ARs.
