Leupold LRT scope questions

I'm considering a Leupold VAR X III 4.5X14X50 LRT MIL Dot or a Leupold VAR X III 4.5X14X40 tactical w/MIL dot reticle.

Is the side focus knob worth the extra money?

The LRT has the 30mm tube compared to the 1" tube on the tactical. Advantage 30mm.

I've read the 50mm objective lens on the LRT raises the spot weld more than the 40mm. Is it enough to need an adjustable stock?

I would like to start shooting at longer distances (700+ yards). I've also read in old posts that Badger bases would really help on the elevation needed for ranges out to 1000 yds. True?

One last question, are target knobs on the VAR III 3.5X10X40 M1 much more durable that ones the regular tactical models?

The scope will be mounted on a Rem 700 VS 308.

Thanks for any help.

I have the 700 VS with a 6.5-20x50 LRT

To answer your questions.

1. The side focus is might nice! I think so.

2. The 50mm will raise the scope, however I can get my scope on the gun with Leupold dual dovetail bases and medium size rings. The clearence is around a 1/16" to a 1/32", but it does not touch. An adjustable check pad would be nice.

3. If you plan on shooting to a 1000 yards, I highly recommend getting some slanted bases. I just finished putting two shims underneath my scope, but the angled bases are more prefered and probably better for the scope. I highly recommend them just in case.

4. I don't know much about durability on the target knobs. My knobs are pretty solid and I don't forsee and future problems with them.

Just keep in mind that the 30mm tube will give you more elevation should you chose to shoot out to distance. I recommend the LRT's. The 6.5-20x50 I have is a mighty fine scope.

LRT

The side focus is great! Much better than the AO.
I have a 6.5X20X50mm, 30mm tube. You will probably need an adjustable cheekpiece, but that depends on how your rifle is stocked.
