Leupold LRT M3 BDC ??

I'm considering a Leupold Long Range Tactical M3 scope to mount on either a Remington 700 VSSF or PSS in .308. I'll mostly be shooting Federal Gold Medal Match M2 (175gr) loads. The scope, however, does not come with a cam for the 175gr load. Looks like it includes cams for the 168gr .308, 220gr .300 Win Mag, and 180gr 30-06. Anyone able to tell me (1) which of the above would most closely track the 175gr .308 beyond 600 yards, or (2) does someone else make a cam for the 175gr .308?

The 30-06 cam should track the 175 at 2600fps in yards. I believe it's listed as meters for the 30-06 but try it in yards with the 175. I've heard that Leupold has or is about to come out with a 175 dial but you'ld have to call them about that unless TShoes can drop in a word on the subject.

Rob....Dropping!!!!!!

Legionaire............
I hate to be the bearer of sad tidings, but none of the dials will track with the 175 Federal............
There is a special order dial, that will track 168 FGM, and Black Hills 168............@ 2600fps.
You will have to order a "Blank", dial, and do your own elevation settings, and markings.
OR, use the '06 dial, and load your own, to 2685fps..........it tracks in YARDS.
OR, use the .308 dial that comes with it, and load to 2685, and it tracks in METERS.
OR,
Buy the MK4M3...........use the '06 dial, and load for the 175's, @ 2685fps...........tracks in YARDS.

Be SURE, you get this written down....you won't find this info easily anywhere else..as Rob can attest to.

PS: Leupold doesn't have this info, and does not know how to help you with this matter..so don't call them for help.
Sounds weird, I know, but......it's for real.:(

Tshoes, thanks for the info. You're not the first one who suggested just going with the MK4M3. Question. Does the MK4 come with a plain "1 click is 1 MOA" dial? If so, the best solution is probably to forget the BDC altogether and simply build data cards for the load under various conditions.

Comments welcome.

MK4M3's....v.s....MKm1's

Legionaire, for your purposes, a Mk4M1, or a LRT M1, will work fine.........

The M3's really shine when SPEED of shot is a prerequisite, they are not target scopes, they are military scopes...

And to answer your question, the MK4M3's, are 1 moa elevation, and 1/2 moa windage ONLY.

The MK4M1's, are 1/4 moa per click, both ele, and windage.
The MAIN advantage to the MK4M1's over the LRT M1's, is that you can (using a .308 cal), get by with using a flat non canted forward taper base.

You have 45 moa up, and 45 moa down.....when mounted flush, the 45 moa's is MORE than enough in .308, to get you farther than the caliber will shoot accurately.

The M1, LRT's.....usually require a 20 moa base, such as the Badger........either scope is a good deal, the Mk4M1, if you can afford it, is THE way to go, IF you want a fixed power scope.
For .308, I suggest the 10x..............

I have the M1's, and the M3's.....and I love em' both, but for real accuracythe 1/4' clicks are the way to go in my opinion.
fwiw...............;)

Must have been the Mark 4 I was thinking about. I could have sworn Lito, at SC Duty Roster, said the LR M3 30-06 tracked the 175? I'm sure not going to ask now with all the screaming going on now. I probably got it messed up in my head. Storage room is short with one brain cell LOL:D Sorry Legionnaire for the bum advice but I can tell you the 300WM dial works great with the 190grn SMK traveling at 2950fps. Doesn't help you much with your problem though.

Rob, re-read my first post.......he DID say that, BUT @ 2685, and Fed 175, doesn't meet the criteria....even in a tight bore, it will only run around 2640..........it IS confusing, to say the least, that's why folks sell the M3's, AFTER they find out what they have to do to get them to work.
You got two classes of shooters(at least), shooters, and riflemen....two different animals......
Shooters shoot for sheer enjoyment, hobby, etc..... riflemen are obsessed.............M3's, are used by the latter category!!!!!!;)

Just get a Nightforce NXS and use the 1/4min clicks. Clicks over BDC any day when using factory ammo. You can never guarantee velocity from a specific rifle with factory. The Nightforce is a better scope anyway.

Tshoes,

Thanks a ton for the input. I currently have a LRT M1 mounted in Badger rings on a 20 MOA base. It is a fine combination and I've no complaints except one: it's too easy to get confused about what elevation I'm currently dialed in to when making rapid changes in the field. I just completed a long range rifle course and while I avoided the problem during the tests, I did shoot off by 15 MOA a couple of times during practice. Seems that the M3s would solve this problem nicely.

I like your statement that there are shooters and riflemen. I'm setting up a VSSF and a PSS, and figure I'll set one up as a shooter (M1) and the other as a rifleman (M3 or equivalent).

Before springing for either an LRT M3 or a Mk4 M3, though, any input on the I.O.R. Valdada tactical scopes? I've never handled one, but two features I like (from the web site) are the mil dot variant reticle and the fact that the reticle is etched in the glass . . . not to mention that they can be had for significantly less than the Leupolds.

Legionaire

Good set up.........you might try blacking out the lines UNDER your ZERO with a marker(will come off later, as long as you don't use a Marksalot!!).
This way, you will know when you are at your zero, and maybe put different color marks on the next 2-3 hash marks...designating yardage.....to YOUR liking.
Will work well cept in the dark!!!!!!!.

Charmed, we are in agreement on the 1/4 clicks.......
Only way to know what any rifle with any ammo will do is CHRONO it..............
And NF makes a great scope...just real big, and bulky..and has 10 moa revolutions instead of 15....at least on the 5.5x22.....don't know bout' the 3.5x15's........

OOOPS....

On the IOR's...forget them..stick with Loopies, or the NF's......NF's have etched reticles.
Haven't heard much good about them.
The main thing to remember is will it hold up?, does it have a proven track record?, and can I sell it without losing my shirt.
Answer for sure to ALL 3.....is Loopoie.

NF does well, but will not hold resale value as well as top of line Loopies..........IN my experience.
