Leupold 3.5-10 Question

I am looking at puting a Leupold 3.5-10 scope on my hunting rifle. The rifle is a browning a-bolt in .300 remington ultra mag. Could you please tell me the differnce between the vari-x III, vari-x III tacticle, and the two long range versions. What would be the best scope for my suited application. Pros and cons to each. I am looking to be able to shoot out to 400 yds or possible 500 yds.

The standard Vari X III has small knobs for W and E. I believe it also has the standard reticle. The Tactical version has target knobs, no AO, and is available with a Mil Dot reticle. Both are 1" tubes. The two long range versions are 30mm tubes, have a side focus knob like the Mk IVs. One has 1/4 min adjustments (M1), the other is cammed as a BDC (M3), with the option for different calibers if memory serves me correctly.
For ease of making adjustments, I would go with the target knobs, and an AO. The problem with hunting is that you generally don't have the time to make adjustments when the animal is present.
The biggest con to the scopes is a lack of the AO on the Tactical model, and IMO the BDC knob on the M3 scope. I would probably choose the M1 version. A bigger tube, sturdy, just make sure to find mounts for a 30mm, which should not be a problem.
Any of the 3.5x10s will reach out to those ranges you asked about, I think what it might come down to is which model you are most comfortable with.
I use the Tactical model and am happy with it, it certainly works for 400 and 500 yards.

I have two of the M3's. I don't see any disadvantage to either the M3 or M1, both of which have the 30mm tube which allows for a bit more elevation adjustment. After a lot of worrying about only having 1 moa adjustments on the BDC on the M3, I found that the adjustments are accurate enough for shooting out to 600 yds, and not having to worry about how many revolutions you did and the rapidity of setting it outweighed the lack of finer adjustments. Several others with good sense also find the 1 moa M3 adjustments to work well. I am sure that there are excellent riflemen who differ and want the 1/4 moa adjustments of the M1 or other scopes.
