Letter to the NRA

This was sent to the NRA in response to CNN's report of the NRA's influence in the coming election:

Last evening, CNN reported that the NRA would be a big player (for the GOP) in the coming election.

It is imperative that we support Pro Second Amendment folks, regardless of party affiliation.

I vote GOP mostly, but although the GOP does reflect my personal values, we do not want to alienate Democrats.

The NRA’s purpose is to ensure our rights are maintained…not to push a specific agenda other then that.

Folks, if the media portrays us as a “Republican” NRA, it will hurt us a hell of a lot more then help our cause.

Please forward this to Wayne LaPierre, Jim Baker, et al.

Thank you

Roy Jackson

Republican NRA? I say it is a Republican/Libertarian/Constitution party/Taxpayers party NRA! In other words all of those with a monopoly on common sense.

Oh, and I thought of somthing else. Since there are good and bad points to voting libertarian from some people's perspective, and using the logic that a vote for Browne or any other 3rd party is a vote for Gore, can I get members to consider voting for an all Republican Congress and for Bush, but on the lessor offices like Water districts, School boards, State Reps ect, you vote libertarian there? I realize the fear of 4 years of Gore is an inticement to vote for anybody who can beat him. I realize too that the Republicans are almost as bad as democrats. To reform the Republican Party, it would be nice if they saw their seats stay in the Congress, but saw major losses to third parties in the lower political arena's. This is a way that you can safely vote to change things.

Sorry moderators; I just had to put that last one in there!

kjm; that's what I've been doing for about 9 years, voting Libertarian for all the lesser posts, voting lesser of 2 evils for major posts. As Heinlein said " the difference between bad and worse is infinitely more important than the difference between good and better".

Unfortunately, all of those parties (with the exception of the Republicans) just don't have the backing of the American people to any extent.
And, we must remember that a prime mover in stopping the Juvenile Crime Bill was John Dingel, a Democrat from Michigan (also an NRA guy).
For us to with the cultural war against guns, we need to bring more within our ranks...some of which will be the traditional Democratic voters.
You know as well as I that all Democrats aren't anti-Second Amendment, just as all Republicans aren't pro-Second Amendment (Lasio, Guliani's replacement in the NY Senate race isn't particularly pro Second). We'll never win over folks like Diane Feinstein, but we can win over many of those "Million Moms".

By giving the impression of the NRA being a Republican bastion, we will hurt our cause.

Now, I've no party affiliation at this time. My particular mindset leans toward libertarian (sort of a PA Ron Paul). So, don't blast me about any other subject then the Second (leave abortion, trade, NAFTA, etc out of this thread).

We have a great opportunity here...for our rights.

We don't want to blow it.

Ezeckial: John Dingle? Isn't he the NRA board member whose vote put the "assault weapon" ban over the top? Who has never seen fit to explain to us what "pressure" caused him to vote for a bill he'd denounced as unconstitutional mere hours before? Who denounced the NRA a "Islamic fundamentalists"? Whose candidate rating right before the '94 election was replaced with a phone number where you could hear excuses?

Yeah, he's in our corner... except when we actually need him.

I know how Will S. felt. I hate selecting a candidate based on a single issue, no matter what that issue is. My strategy in elections is to vote for balance; under the current two party system, I believe we need either a Republican President and a Democratic majority in Congress or vice versa. This prevents either party from pushing through the most extreme bits of their platform. Since neither party is guaranteed of a cakewalk, they have to pay at least some attention to public opinion.
