Letter to the Governator

I am sending this letter to the Governor of California. I am posting it here for your comments. As I am not as well versed as many of you your comments are appreciated. Please if you have strong opinions send them by e mail if they are not appropriate for this forum:

DEAR GOVERNOR SCHWARZENEGGER:

I watched your speech at the Republican national convention last Tuesday. Great Speech, my Dad, who died in 1972 and was a diehard Republican would have enjoyed it. I can see him laughing now at your last line.

Your comments about Immigrants really ring true, both my grandfathers were immigrants, one from Germany and the other from Poland. They came here from oppressive governments, and worked hard and never looked back. They were definitely Republicans. My Polish grandpa started working on the docks, unloading animal hides by hand from ships for a leather goods factory. He and my grandmother survived the depression raising four children. He worked hard his whole life. He sent both sons to fight WW2, one of them even got to visit your homeland, in the drivers seat of a Sherman tank. I got to visit too, several decades later, I left my tank back in Germany.

When you return to your day job, you will undoubtedly be presented with legislation to sign. Because of the nature of our times, some of that legislation will deal with further restrictions placed on the ownership of firearms.

I could go on at great length with the usual arguments and facts, but I am sure you have heard them all and have formulated your own opinion. But before you sign another “ Reasonable Gun Restriction” into law, consider your own comments about what makes a Republican. Are Republicans for more intrusive government, more government control, more bureaucracy, more restrictions? Do Republicans support the spirit of the Constitution and bill of rights, all of them? Are Republicans to be the architects of the same type of government my grandparents left behind so many years ago?

Laws such as the “Assault Weapons Ban” and bans on certain high caliber rifles do little to reduce crime, and are designed to punish citizens who enjoy shooting sports. They are punitive and go after the very people who support true Republican ideals. I have met many gun owners, some of them immigrants like yourself, while enjoying the variety of shooting sports available to the average person in this country. For the most part they are solid citizens, hardworking and compassionate. They believe in this country and it’s freedoms and opportunities. They deserve better than to have more oppressive and punitive laws foisted upon them for the sake of political gain.

In short, do not be a girly man when it comes to basic freedoms.

Thank you

Geoff Ross

Excellent. If you haven't sent it yet, I'd suggest a change, though. Don't give him credit for having looked into the matter - challenge him to stop being a girly man and do the research.

Shorten it up!

If you want to make a statement to a public figure, use the KISS principle. Shorten it up to "Thanks" and make your statement. Someone will read that.

Shorter would probably be better. You might shorten some of your family history.

You might add the slippery slope, though.
First, it was the "Satuday Night Specials," that were banned, but only those, we were told. Next were "Assault Weapons", then "pocket rockets". Now, we are told, "it is the 50 caliber rifle that must go." Should I even venture a guess where the next step leads?
or similar.

K80Geoff is a doer not a whiner!

That's a beautiful letter. It is heart felt, sincere, and well written. I enjoyed reading it very much. Furthermore, I'm gratified that you wrote it!
My I kindly suggest that you change the term "high caliber" to large caliber, and get to your point a little quicker for the Gov.
He probably sees only a tiny representative fraction of the letters he receives, (hopefully the poignant ones) and is simply apprized to the numbers pro or con on a giving topic. I hope he sees yours!

I wish that more people would contact the Governor! But, alas, most people are watchers than doers.

By the way, whats with the people (including "Staff") who rack up huge numbers of posts with meaningless one word or nearly one word replys?

The letter is reasonable. If you get a response, please post it here. However, please understand that you may not be dealing with a Republican. You are, in my opinion, dealing with a Kennedy. And it shows with his passage of the 50 BMG bill - AB50, submitted and approved by Democratic reps here in Calif.
Good luck. Wrote many similiar letters to my reps here in Calif over a number of years, with no luck, and not even an indication that my input would be considered.
I wish you well.

Good Job Maurine!

Don't give up writing letters. They do keep track of how many contacts they receive on each side of an issue!

Regards
HH
