Colorado Fifth District
2230 Rayburn House Office Building
Washington, DC 20515

Dear Representative Hefley,

I would like to thank you for the letter dated June 19th, 2000. Although I have been active in politics, this is the first letter I have received from the Federal Level and it is appreciated and noted that you responded.

The “Common Sense” gun control laws that are being decided on and unfortunately passed throughout the country are a knee jerk reaction to a societal problem. History proves that government involvement in the daily lives of people lead to far greater consequences than the status quo. I fear the rapidly growing press machine is drowning any actual common sense people have left: Prohibition did not stop alcohol, the “War on Drugs” is equally ineffective, and minors are becoming addicted to cigarettes in ever increasing numbers. Although my positions on these other matters are immaterial, efforts to ban or restrict thoughts, actions, words, or goods are pretty much worthless. The Second Amendment, like the First or the Fourth should not be restricted through petty “feel good” legislation; through attempts of cities to fleece private industry; or through the Executive Branch trying to find why Americans are killing each other. Our only one true role model elicits sex in the White House, lies to the People and to the Courts, and attacks sovereign nations without Congressional approval. We live in a time where world and U.S. history is not taught because it is politically incorrect, math is racist, and tests are “dumbed down” rather than expectations raised. This is not “Common Sense.”

I am sure, that in this political climate that you must receive many emails and letters from people who wish to sway your opinion. It is reassuring to see a politician vote, on my behalf, my choice. Please be assured that I am no single-issue constituent and will write from time to time to let you know my feelings on some of the issues facing the American populous today. Please keep up the good work and continue to represent our state well.

Respectfully,

Dan Huben
