Senator Harry Reid
United States Senate
Washington, DC 20510
Dear Senator Reid:
I am writing to ask that you oppose the nomination of John Ashcroft for United States Attorney General.
I support reasonable gun safety laws such as the Brady Bill and the ban on Assault Weapons that keep guns out of the hands of criminals and children. These laws work, and should be vigorously enforced and defended. The Attorney General is responsible for enforcing these and other gun safety laws.
John Ashcroft has too entangled a history with the NRA and other extreme gun organizations. He should not be responsible for enforcing the gun laws that the NRA has opposed at every step. The NRA spent almost $400,000 on his behalf for his re-election, in payback for his “A” rating for his votes against common sense gun laws. He even voted against child safety locks and to close the gun show loophole.
In 1999, he supported a ballot initiative in his home state of Missouri that would have allowed almost anyone -- including convicted child molesters and stalkers -- to carry concealed guns in public. Thankfully, Missouri voters rejected this bad idea, as they rejected him a year later.
Clearly this is not the person who should be entrusted with enforcing the gun laws that we need to continue the decline in gun violence. I value the safety of my community. I ask you to vote “no” on John Ashcroft’s nomination for Attorney General.
Sincerely,
Violent Felons
