Texas Governor George W. Bush sent the following letter of welcome to the Texas State Rifle Association on the occasion of its 1999 Annual Meeting in Austin. To me, the letter is interesting--especially if Bush runs for President--because it suggests a positive view of gun rights and gun people.

"Greetings to the Texas State Rifle Association.

"Welcome to Austin for your annual meeting. This February 20 - 21 gathering provides a great opportunity for members to meet and discuss issues of common concern.

"For 80 years, the TSRA has provided valuable services to residents of the Lone Star State. I applaud you for defending your members' constitutional rights and keeping them informed of the latest laws related to gun ownership. I also commend you for sponsoring gun safety courses and supporting wildlife management programs that will allow our children and grandchildren to enjoy our state's abundant natural resources ....

"Laura joins me in sending best wishes for a successful meeting.

"Sincerely,

"George W. Bush"
