Letter from my Senator

Thanks to everyone here at TFL, I have just recently begun writing letters opposing gun control, this is the first answer that I have received. Thought you guys might appreciate it also.

Dear Mr. Chad:

Thank you for contacting me opposing gun control legislation. I appreciate having the benefit of your views and comments on this issue.

I understand your concern about targeting firearms instead of criminals in an effort to reduce crime. Gun control provisions are rooted in the naive hope that they will deter criminal activity. Such measures, as noted over years of study, serve only to deter law-abiding citizens from obtaining guns--those who do not disobey the law in the first place. Yet gun control would punish them and infringe on their constitutional rights for the illusory goal of preventing criminals from obtaining such weapons. To solve our crime problem we need swift and sure criminal control penalties applied to those who violate the law.

You may be sure that I will continue my ardent fight against gun control measures and will work for criminal control policies that strengthen, not weaken, our criminal justice system. The Second Amendment guarantees our constitutional right to keep and bear arms, and I intend to see that it continues to do so.

I appreciate having the opportunity to represent you in the United States Senate. Thank you for taking the time to contact me.

Yours respectfully,
Phil Gramm
United States Senator

Are you not lucky to have Senator Gramm as your representative?

You can have mine, the dishonorable Robert Byrd and the carpetbagging Jay Rockyfellaw.

Chadintex, you're very, very lucky. A letter from my senator would read as follows:

Thank you for contacting me and expressing your views on gun control. However, please know that because I inherited Kohl's Department stores and am now the richest man in the United States Senate, I can tell you the following: I know more than you do; I don't care what you think; and I can afford all the protection I need so I don't need to worry about whether citizens can own guns.

Having said that, I do like little boys and, if you can provide me with some, I could be persuaded to change my position.

Yours truly,
Herb Kohl

Dick

I recently wrote my senator and was lucky enough to get a response. He said he supported gun rights and he is better than most (I suppose). When I wrote him, I made a clear point that there is no "gunshow loophole". I have reviewed all the laws I can find and there is nothing giving exclusive exception the "gunshow purchases". I politely asked for any reference to any official documention clearly indicating there is a "gunshow loophole". The one thing in his response that really bothered me was his oppostion to certain gunshow sales, but he never did give me any legal reference to any such "loophole". The general public watched enough tv and probably believe there is a "gunshow loophole". I however cannot find one in all the reading I have done. I think what they are ultimately trying to do is ban private sales.

Someone please provide me with a reference to the "gunshow loophole". I can't find anything saying "back ground checks are required for firearms purchases except at gun shows" or anything like that. Last time I checked, purchases at gunshows are subject to the EXACT SAME LAWS AS OUTSIDE THE GUNSHOW. Of course if we try to redefine words such as "is", anything is possible.

Yes, I do feel lucky to have Sen. Gramm. I also have Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison who supports our rights also. She hasn't responded to my letters yet though. On the down side my Congressional delegates are two of the most liberal democrats in Texas. I doubt I will be hearing back from them.

I write or send email to both of my Senators (Connie Mack and Bob Graham) and my congressional Rep (Cliff Stearns) fairly regularly. On the gun control issue I receive letters back from Mack and Stearns. Granted they are the standard form letters, but non the less I do get a response. I have received NOTHING on the gun control issue from the Democratic Senator from Florida..
Wonder how I'll be voting when he's up for re-election? Mark / FL

Yes we are lucky in our two senators.

Chad, you have my sympathy with your reps. I on the other hand have Sam Johnson. Very pro RKBA and a prety nice guy.

We're at the stage where we have to do more than just vote for pro-gun pols.

Get thee down to the campaign office and volunteer for passing out flyers, lawn posters, etc. Name recognition means a lot.

I helped man the voter registration booth at the recent Las Vegas gun show. One of the registrars was a newspaper reporter and an old political hand. He told me that 10 motivated supporters normally would swing an election when things were 50-50. If your boy is ahead 60-40, then help him hammer his opposition like a tent peg. If he's behind, your contribution could be all out of proportion to your numbers.

Folks, of all years, this is the one to actively participate - that means your bodies in the field, not just a check.
