Letter from my NY State Senator

Here is the text of a letter I just received From Sen Owen Johnson (R), my New York state senator.

Dear Mr Ross:

As you are undoubetedly aware by now, I am a strong defender of the Second Amendment and the rights of law-abiding citizens to own handguns.

This session, the legislature passed a gun safety bill that was proposed by Governor George Pataki to: conform state law to federal statutes already on the book since 1994 which ban certain types of guns identified as "assault weapons"; require that safety locks be sold with the purchase of new handguns; ensure that sales of guns that take place at gun shows be subject to background checks through the Brady system; require that gun MANUFACTURERS and /or FIREARMS DEALERS submit ballistics identification to a central data bank; and raise the age for securing a pistol permit from 18 to 21, with a special provision to allow for youths to continue to participate in sport shooting competitions.

The bill in no way limits or restricts law-abiding citizens rights to possess guns in New York State, other than the raising of the minimum age requirement. The measure now goes to the governor to be signed into law..

The number of gun control bills introduced in the Legislature is alarming, several of which negatively affect a citizens Second Amendment rights. In fact, the Senate does battle every year with the New York City liberals in the Assembly who wish to legislate away your Second Amendment rights. In addition to my efforts in keeping these bills from reaching the Senate Floor for a vote, I am the sponsor of several bills that reaffirm gun owners rights. One such bill prohibits licensing officers from denying a carrying permit to any person who has a clean moral, criminal, and mental health record. In addition, I am the prime sponsor of S.3926 to provide that no additional restrictions be imposed by gun licensing officers in excess of sttutory requirements. Another bill S.5197, forces New York City to recognize the validity of handgun licenses issued in all other jurisdictions of the state.

While all of these bills routinely pass the senate, the assembly continues to fail to act on this legislation. It is obvious that the leaders in that house do not share our views concerning a law abiding citizens right to posess and carry a gun without undue and arbitrary restrictions.

Please be assured of my ongoing efforts to protect law-abiding citizens Second Amendment rights.

With best personal regards, I remain

Signed Owen Johnson, vice president pro tempore.

PS he voted yes for Pataki's bill.

One reason to vote in the next Presidential election.

It's the Supreme Court, Stupid!

. . . conform state law to federal statutes already on the book since 1994 which ban certain types of guns identified as "assault weapons"

The bill in no way limits or restricts law-abiding citizens rights to possess guns in New York State

Typical politician - speaking out of both sides of his mouth.

If he had any honesty (yeah, I know), he would have told you he voted for the Petaki bill and said "here's why".

The folks in Colorado call these guys
"RINOS" - Republican In Name Only.

You might use that term is a return letter and tell him what it means.

Typical Orwellian Newspeak:

"The bill in no way limits or restricts law-abiding citizens rights to possess guns in New York State, other than the raising of the minimum age requirement."

That's like saying, "I didn't rape your wife, all I did was drug her and have sex with her while she was passed out. She didn't seem to mind so why should you?"

Sooooooeeeeeeee!

He is, of course, absolutely wrong, and you should point it out to him. The federal statute is due to sunset in a few years, while the state law is permanent. He's helped to make sure that New Yorkers will remain oppressed even if we manage to stop the federal law from being extended!

Having grown up in NY State under a Republican Governor (Rockheadfella) and then venturing out into the world and learning what REAL Democrats and Republicans were (that is those not from NY) I offer the following observations;
NY Republicans would be considered "Southern Democrats if they plyed their trade anywhere else in the country, save maybe Kalifornia.
NY Democrats would be considered "Socialists" if they plyed their trade in some areas of the country and "Communists" in other areas of the country, in Kalifornia I suspect they might be "Conservitives".
Now the Good People of NY have been listening to their polititions BS for so long they think the rest of the country is screwed up.
Poor, poor, souls.......
