I have researched the FORUM and have not seen an explanation for the following. What is getting a "letter" on a firearm. In particular I read about this with S&W's. Is there a special registration, is this beneficial in a collector's sense, should I pursue this for my weapons? Kind of in the dark about this .thanx

The letter you are talking about is from the Smith and Wesson records department. You supply a description and the serial number of your gun and they will look it up and send you a letter telling the history of your gun.Who it was shipped to,orginal finish and stuff like that. The cost is 30.00 and there is a link on the S&W website.

Hello! I will field your question. On some occassions when the
date of manufacture is in question, one can obtain a letter relating
to information about said weapon from the S&W historian, Mr. Roy
Jinks. Usually, this is the case with older undocumented weapons.
A nominal fee ($30, I think?) is the amount S&W charges for this
service.

In some instances, members here at TFL can look the desired info
up for you using The Standard Catalog Of Smith & Wesson 2nd
edition by Supica & Nahas.

Best Wishes,

Thanks for the info. Would I want to get these as a "nice" thing to have with my weapons, or is it mainly for discrepancies. In other words, would be like a pedigree or build sheet type of thing or don't bother.

I guess it really depends on you. I would imagine most people get them for their collectible Smiths, or want to know how a gun left the factory. I personally just sent away for a letter for a gun that I plan to use as a shooter, just for fun. There's an example letter at the link above. Most of the others I have read have similar info.

I have lettered several of my guns and have letters on some of the guns I bought. The smith letters are generally boilerplate on a particular model except for about 2 sentances. In those sentances you get the date shipped, and the configuration and where it was shipped. If it went to a particular person you get that also. In some cases it was worth the $30 to me, but many of them I will never letter. I mean after about the sixth 38/44 heavy duty letter that says 5 paragraphs identically and then 2 sentances of information you have to ask yourself if the 180$ would have been better spent on ammo....
