Lets mandate the teaching of firearm safety

Why not teach firearm safety in schools? Why don't we push for amendments to all legislation seeking to award "law enforcment assistant funds" to local law enforcement agencies that they offer classes in firearm safety in their community? If you want the funds then you must offer courses on a regular basis. Perhaps monies for ranges could also be available. Why not go a step further and require the teaching of firearm safety in schools? We teach sex education, drugs, safe driving, and a host of other topics. What is wrong with teaching firearm safety? Let me ask you this; If it saved one life, would it be worth it? We know that firearm education saves lives.

I've got a better idea!

Let's not.

Dangling a big fat "tax revenue carrot" out in front of LEOs and making them teach our kids to shoot in order to get it is a disaster waiting to happen. The good ol days of High School ROTC and competitive shooting are over. That ain't necessarily a bad thing. Putting the government in charge of more gun-related activities is a disaster waiting to happen.

Better to just face the fact that it's a dangerous world...there ain't a damn thing you can do to legislate or train everyone into adopting the right behaviors and attitudes and making the world safe.

Better to teach your kids the importance of watching their backs, arming themselves, and being able to recognize and stay clear of morons.

The problem with this idea is that with the political climate today, the message put forth by so many anti's would be that guns are bad.
With so many ROTC units having to stop teaching markmanship( a group that has the most valid excuse to teach it) due to the anti's, what makes you think they'll let ANY pro-gun content into such a course?

In the current political climate, you would have a better chance of the government building brothels to teach sex education than building ranges to teach gun safety.

If we put this government in charge of teaching about firearms, they will teach that:

1. Firearms are bad.
2. Firearms cause crime.
3. People (including parents) should not have them in their house.
4. Thirteen "children" a day . . . .

Let's do it ourselves, Roy. Remember what happened since the government got into the gun design business? Soon we'll have Slick and Wesson guns designed by Clinton himself. For what it's worth, our local Boy Scout troop still gives medals for the shooting sports.

Regards,

Ledbetter

Let's try a different way.

No mandate. No tax funds. Screw the political climate.

It could be an elective course taught for free by NRA volunteers or similar people after school or on the weekends for some period of hours and for credit.

Approach the school and see what they say. If they say "no" do it anyway credit or no. If you are a school teacher, (history, civics) tell them they get extra credit by volunteering, researching some subject, or by getting firearms training.

I have to agree with Roy. We all know there are a lot of pro-gun law enforcement officers out there. It is wrong to think they are our enemy. Yes, many if not most of the Chiefs and heads are anti-gun but not the rank and file officer. To refuse to educate firearm safety because we don't trust the government I think is making a mistake. We can't afford to sit back and watch the government continue to impose one more restriction. Firearm training in the military is better than nothing but few serve in the military. There are not enough of the pro-firearm band of which we are a part that are willing to get involved to the extent required. There is nothing to prevent each of us as a citizen to assist in training. I have taught women handgun safety classes for years. I have lectured on self-defense to both law enforcement and non-lawenforcement alike. There are a lot of men and woman who are concerned about the rising crime. Some want to learn how to use a firearm safely and others want to carry concealed.

It seems to me msny of my fellow pro-gun brethern are giving in to anti's. If we continue as we are we are not going to prevail. I hate to sound pessimistic but anyone who really think we are winning this fight now must be sleeping. The government continues to get stronger and we continue to grow fewer and weaker. I ain't giving up but we must be more demanding. If we can force the training we will enlarge the shooting public and pick up some valuable future members. I personally can't see anything negative about it.

Many of you probably don't remember back in the late 60's or early 70's when the Orlando, Florida Police Department or Sheriff's Department taught firearms safety to woman and guess what? The number of rapes dropped drastically.

I think it has merit.

It would also be a tough fight in my town. Just the politics alone would eventually defeat any proposal weather the proposal made sense or not. The teachers union would lead the fight and would stomp on any proposal as soon as it arises and fight it for as long as it took.
I think it would be better for gun clubs to offer free shooter instruction and sponsor competitive team sports for all ages and sexes. It is going to take time to rebuild and gain public support.

I know it would not be easy but few things worthwhile are. We are against training because the government may have a hand in it. How many things can you name right now that the government is not involved in? We got in this mess by sitting back and not getting involved. Those of us who support the RKBA know that both common sense and the facts are on our side and yet the anti groups continue to bury their heads in sand and slam us every chance they get. We always seem to be on the defensive. We need to be on the offensive. We know firearms are safer in the home than food, but guess what we continue to take a beating with the media and the politicans for the most part follow the polls. Most of us know we are much more secure with a firearm than without. We know the government can't protect us. When you need a policeman it like an ambulance. You need one now. Thirty seconds can make the difference between life and death.

You have heard the politicians say: "If those committing crimes had a job, three meals a day, medical care and no firearms we have an ideal society." Well guess what? Thats exactly what prison inmates have and they got murder and mayhem on a daily basis.

I may be going a little far for some but I wish we encouraged law abiding citizens who are competent in the use of firearms to keep arms available in their businesses should the need arise. It would certainly be safer than it is now in some Wendys and McDonalds. Just one guy or gal in Luby's could have made a difference.

With an increase emphasis on training and safe handling will come more shooting and more hunters not to mention more members for GOA, NRA and similar organizations and that gentlemen mean a better informed population and more votes.

The positive is far outweighed by the negation in my opinion. We shouldn't be afraid the agenda is going to be anti-gun. Most of you know the course instructors are NRA trained.

I for one see what the government is doing now and I don't like it and thats why I am a ONE ISSUE VOTER.

There is a good article titled: Pro gun article in the Washington Post under the General Discussion Forum which appears to be relevant to the issue raised in this forum.

Roybean,

Although I posted a 'pessimistic' reply to your post earlier, please do not take it as me telling you not to try... I would urge you to raise the issue with you local school board if you feel that you can carry on a credible debate in a very public forum. I served on my town council for 6 years and I speak from past experience. Anything is fair game in that forum. Just be prepared for "some" resistance. I respect anyone who makes an honest attempt at doing what he thinks is right.
**Think of it this way, someone once had the guts to stand up in Washington and make a proposal to take away your gun rights!**
