Lets Hear It for The P228.

Any other folks out there that rely on their P228s as primary defense tools? I find the P228 one of the finest of SIG Sauer's offerings. Light, compact, superb balance, accurate beyond belief, buttery smooth DA/SA pulls, and a natural pointer, what's there not to like? Please share any P228 stories you might have.

Tecolote--your post is a good summary of the fine qualities of the P228.

The first P228 I ever saw was in the used case at the local gunshop some years ago. The previous owner had not treated it right--it was marred, scarred, and dinged, like it had been carried in a tool box. However, I could see through the carelessness to the quality underneath. It was also the most comfortable pistol I ever gripped. Basically, it was one of those guns that kind of talks to a prospective purchaser.

I didn't buy that particular P228, but later paid the dealer some money down to order me a new one. I don't usually buy a gun sight unseen, but felt it would be okay in this case, and it was. My range experience confirmed the quality of the gun. So, the P228 I ordered is one of my two main carry guns (the other is a Glock 26). I later ordered a two-tone P228 to go with it.

IMHO, if any gun inspires a warm fuzzy or two, it's the P228. :)

Greetings Guy's; Tecolote, I agree with you
and Jimmy; the Sig P228 is one fine firearm.
Here's my story. In October of 98, I purchased a LNIB H&K USP full size .45 ACP
from an individual advertising in the Birmingham, AL News. I had a little extra
cash after acquiring the H&K, so I contacted
this person again to see what else he had
for sale? It just so happened that he had
a CZ75 and a Sig P228 that he wanted to depart with. So, I drove over to inspect
his offerings and to my surprise the Sig
slide was stamped "Herndon, Virginia"; not
Exeter, New Hampshire. Realizing that this
firearm may have been one of the first
imported into the good 'ole US of A; I took
it off his hands. The gun is emaculate; and
came with two hi-cap magazines, test target,
instuction booklet, warranty card and came
packaged in the silver-gray box. The markings
indicate the firearm was made in 1990; totally in West Germany. It now resides here
with three other Sig's (P220A, P226, & P229)
that I own; and ain't any of them going
anywhere, except to the range and back!!!! :)
That's my P228 story, hope that everyone else
enjoy's their's, as much as I have mine.

Shoots well - accurate - relaible - takes hi-caps. For a compact 9mm, it's about as sweet as they come!

I believe the 228 to be the best out-of-the-box shooting 9mm compact to be had! I picked up two of them soon after hearing that they were discontinuing civilian sales of the 226 and 228 a few years ago (already had a 226). It was made for my hand!

Sorry, I don't have a real story to share but regarding the above: it's just 9 mm which is just enough, but the gun's too bulky for this small caliber. Sigs are my favorite guns, but if I ever decide to get a 9 mm (I don't see why I should though), it's not going to be 228. There're plenty of guns almost twice as small.

Emin,

But size doesn't matter. ;) I don't mind the size as I get suprior fit. Yes, there are plenty of smaller pistols, but for me, none feel quite as good as the P228. Thus it doesn't make sense for me to carry another pistol that doesn't point naturally or balance as well.

When I first decided on a defense piece for daily carry I opeted for a Glock 19. Right there in the case next to it was a P228. I passed on it because I thought 7ozs was too much extra to carry around. Some time later I went to the range and fired a friend's P228. I was hooked. Never mind the extra 7 onzs of weight, with the P228 I actually hit to point of aim. I didn't have to worry about getting used to a unique trigger system, the DA/SA pulls on the P228 were just too sweet. Well, the Glock is now for sale because a P228 has replaced it as primary defense tool.

i made the mistake of going to the local gunshop "just looking" you know. i picked up a 228 and that was all it took. it fit my hand like a glove and shoots great. needless to say my wife was not impressed!

If I could only own one pistol, it would be a Sig 228...for all the right reasons! :D

deanf,

I feel your pain. I am selling a Glock 19 because of debt. I won't part with my P228, however.

I have a P228 with crimson trace laser grips.
It is quite fun to shoot, and very accurate.

One question - are there good hi-cap mags besides the factory originals?

lucky085, the Mecgars are the best I have seen and they boost the capacity to 15rnds. I have three for my P228 and wish I had bought more. Very hard to find.
