LER scope mounted on sks gas tube?

Would I be able to mount a ler scope that far forward on an sks? I have the tapco stock and gas tube- it mounts extremly tight and I think it would be a good mounting point over the cover mounts.

A red dot might be okay but I wouldnt count on any type of magnified optic holding zero.

Gas-tube-only rails that arent affixed to a lower handguard rail unit are up there with top cover scope mounts in terms of suckage.

Ok i think your probably right. Originally i wanted to do the scout mount- but i cant justify dropping 200+ in an optic and a mount for a rifle that may not shoot all that well at a distance.

Another thing to consider is have you ever handled a Scout setup? Reading about it, I thought it was a cool concept and expected I would probably get one. Then,,,, I handled one and hated it. Just feels and looks weird to me. One of it's selling points is fast target acquisation. I found that I am much quicker with a conventional scope setup, even cranked up to 12x. Some like it, I don't. I did have a scope on my SKS for a while. It was a good, solid drill&tap side receiver mount that worked very well. I took it off b/c I shoot well with the original open sights and I like to keep battle rifles in simple original condition.

Have you verified that your SKS is even capable of the accuracy you are seeking, before you dump more (unrecoverable) funds into the project?
Some SKSs shoot very well.
Most shoot decently enough (3-5" group at 100 yards).
Some shoot shotgun patterns at 50 yards (18"+).

And...
If you've read even half of the "Scope + SKS" threads on these forums, you'll know that even the 'good' scope mounts have marginal reviews and mixed success.

If you really want optics on your SKS, the best way to do it is to drill and tap the receiver for a side mount, and put the scope or red-dot where it is supposed to be (directly over the ejection port). Which means you need to install a good brass deflector, and you can't use stripper clips (if you care).

The easiest way to improve the SKS is to leave it alone and learn to use the factory sights, or put a good set of replacement iron sights on it.

Trying to reliably scope an SKS is generally an exercise in futility.

Tech Sights are highly rated - and what most people end up with, after wasting far too much money on failed scope mounts.

Tech sights definitely don't look bad- does anyone else have them on here that can give opinions? I plan on shooting out to about 100 yds.

Some of the reviews i read on the techs are stating never to remove the rear cover to clean- leave it on permanently. Cleaning the sks i always remove the cover. I wouldn't want to clean it without it.

The SKS gas tube scope mounts are useless. They wiggle around all over the place.

The only good SKS scope mounts are the receiver mounts that require drilling and tapping.

I've decided against anything other than the tech sights- all I'm wondering now is if they lose zero when pulling the cover to clean.
