Neb. Cop Charged in Fatal Shooting

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) _ A white police officer will be charged with
manslaughter for shooting an unarmed black man after a high-speed
chase, authorities said.
Douglas County Attorney Jim Jansen said he would file the charge
against Jared Kruse, 31, a seven-year veteran of the Omaha police
force.
Kruse had been chasing George Bibins, 35, who was suspected of
car theft, on July 19.
Seconds after Bibins crashed into a telephone pole, Kruse jumped
out of his police car and shot Bibins while he was still inside the
vehicle he was suspected of stealing, Police Chief Don Carey said.
Bibins died of a single gunshot wound to the shoulder.
``We feel the county attorney did what he had to do under the
circumstances,'' Carey said.
Following the shooting, Carey had said the department's internal
investigation could not find a justification for the shooting.
Kruse's attorney, Mike Fabian, said he was surprised by the
charge. ``We'll address the facts in court,'' he said.
About 300 people gathered for a vigil Tuesday near the spot
where Bibins was killed.
Speakers commended the prosecutor for his decision to file
charges against Kruse, and an alliance of pastors called for a
review of police-pursuit procedures. The clergymen and community
leaders asked for increased oversight of the police department.

Well, this is at least 3 time this week that Leos have shot and killed unarmed persons.

I think its sad.

Someone's death is a tragedy, but perhaps we should wait to see the circumstances first, before judging the LEO.

They're actually CHARGING him?!?!? That's the first time I've heard of that all year.

Oh. Wait. No it's not. It's just that every single one has been found not guilty.

Sounds like a combination of adrenilin and contempt of cop. I want to know what kind of gun is lethal that quickly with a shot to the shoulder?

I gotta agree with the Panzerfuehrer on this one, we should not judge in haste. But I also want to know what he used that caused death, with one shot to the shoulder. Whatever it was, I don't belive it's in my very tiny (that's for the LEO's here)collection. WOW! Reality is stranger than fiction!

"Following the shooting, Carey had said the department's internal

Why does anyone who says, "this Leo went overboard" is thought to be judging in haste? The police investigation could not justify the shooting.

If other police think the Leo wasn't justified, that is good enough reason for me. And, perhaps thats reason to still have at least a small amount of faith in the system despite the number of similar stories we have seen lately.

If the car was disabled (wrapped around a telephone pole) and the suspect was in the car, unarmed, I do not see how he was posing an immediate threat to himself or others.

So what?

After the Diallo verdict, this ones' an easy call.

This "officer" of the law, as so many these days will walk... above the law and all that.

Can you say: Velcome to Police State,USA comrade?

I just knew you could <no grin>.

OK, I'm ready. Flame on, you LEO's!

Dunno fellas. The opening lines making it into a race issue, automatically makes me question the entire article.

Why is it even important? One man is dead, and another's life effectively destroyed. That doesn't sell papers, though.

I don't think anyone should be attempting to judge the officer.

Were you there?

Did you see exactly what happended?

Did the suspect reach for anything while he was in the car?

Did the officer command, "show me your hands!" but the suspect was fumbling with somehting out of his view?

We have NO information about this case other than the short media slanted article. It is entirely possible that the shoot was justified but the PD is hanging this LEO out to dry because of the "political" ramifications of a white/black shoot. Its happened before and it can happen again.

We need more information.

Cuerno de chivo, you've proven me wrong, although I think I don't have enough significant digits on my calculator to compute the ratio of guilty to not-guilty.

On the other hand, there are several cops in Albuquerque, NM who watched one of their own (Matt Griffin, later convicted of multiple bank robberies) shoot a guy, with his hands up, in the back. They all agreed to lie about it to protect the perp (Griffin). It was discovered later that the guy was an accomplice of the perp's, stopped for an unrelated matter. The perp murdered him to keep him from talking. Seven years later, when the statute of limitations had expired, one of them came forward ("conscience", he said  ) to tell the truth. No repercussions for any of them.

I live outside the Omaha area, and the news media is having a field day with this.
Todays paper showed pictures from the funeral, with the caption of "grievers at shooting VICTIMs wake."
The guy who was shot had been out of prison a total of nine days. He had an extensive criminal record of burgarlry, grand theft auto, shop lifting, etc.
He would have immediately gone back to jail for a very long time.
The officers noticed a Jeep Cherokee blowing
thru red lights, that had been reported stolen.
After a chase of speeds up to 95mph thru residential neighborhoods, driving over stop sticks, the Jeep finally crashed.
The occupant was on the passenger side doing something, when the officer shot.
There have been local rumours of shots during the chase from the perp.
The local prosecutor has a record of charging police despite what grand juries say.
This story is far from over, and not all the details are out.
It is sad when a life is lost and a life is ruined.
