LEO Printing/Flashing.

This is just a general question directed toward LEO ... If, when carrying while off-duty (or maybe while undercover), a civilian notices that you are printing and/or part of your weapon is exposed, how would you want them to handle that:

Mind their own bunsiness

Notify you of the fact

Report it to LE to officially deal with the matter
FUD

As a police officer I would have wanted them to do 2) tell me I was printing.

Now as a civilian (retired) I would want them to do 2) tell me I was printing.

Gunslinger, I must disagree. I think it would be unwise for a civilian to walk up to another "civilian," who's carrying concealed and note that he/she is carrying a gun.

What if the guy carrying is, instead of an off duty cop, a bad guy?? The bad guy just might haul out his cannon and cap the curious civilian who asked too many questions.

I suggest that if a civilian sees someone carrying "kinda concealed", and wants to get involved, then call a cop. Cops are supposed to handle that kind of thing.

It'd be a cold day in Hell when I'd question someone like that.

Just my thoughts. FWIW. J.B.

The United States is a very diverse place and I think proper etiquette in this situation depends largely on where you're standing at the time. Gun and/or Law Enforcement culture varies greatly from state to state, county to county, town to town. Would your assistance get the same reaction in Washington as it would in Texas? How about Seattle vs. Yakima?

All I'm saying, I suppose, is that this is not a universally answerable question. What may be good advise to one TFL member could be bad advise to another.

I live in the same part of the world as Jay Baker and I wouldn't think twice about pointing out a fashion accident to a fellow gun owner. I would appreciate the same if I were the one who made the mistake. If I were in Florida, however, I might be more inclined to mind my own business. Then again, is this northern Florida or Southern Florida? ;)

Jay, the question was not what would be recommended be done if someone were to see someone else printing. FUD asked in another thread if we thought it would be wise to tell someone they were printing. I did not respond to that thread. The question here was "what would we, as an LEO, like for a person to do if they saw us printing". Personally I would like the person to tell me. However I wold not recommend that a person tell someone else. Simply that if it were being told I would appreciate it and thank them. Two very similar but very different questions.

I had a friend who asked me a similar question, about a year ago. I recommended that he ignore the situation, so long as he felt that nothing was out of the ordinary.

I would want you to tell me I was printing. Especially if I was undercover or doing surveillance, printing could get my a$$ killed in these situations.

I don't think that there is a clear cut answer. This is, as many have noted, very situation dependent.
There are times when I would want to be told, there are times when I would not.

There are times when it would be "safe" for one person to approach an armed man and point out there gun, and clearly times when it would not.

We carry guns to defend ourselves, I don't think it is wise to put ourselves in a potentially risky situation by pointing out a gun to a stranger.

As an LEO, I would ask you all to use your best judgement, to profile the person and the situation, and then decide whether or not to notify an On-Duty LEO.
