Police Officer Deaths have Increased 13% in the First Half of the Year Since 1999
08-30-2000
Washington-- As our nations overall crime rate is declining, the number of officers killed in the of duty seems to be increasing since 1999. This increase comes at a time in the United States when violent crimes fell more than 10 percent, the lowest it has ever been on record since they started keeping track 27 years ago. Of the seventy-six police officers who died in the first half of this year alone, 26 were shot to death, 24 died in auto accidents, 6 died when other automobiles struck them while outside of their own vehicles, 5 died while they were involved in aircraft accidents, and the remaining few were killed of random causes including drowning and stabbings.

Expect this figure to go up as more restrictive, right-encroaching laws are passed and enforced.

Oh please. If you pay attention to the numbers, more than half died in traffic situations. More than likely involving drunk drivers. (We've had one fatality and over 2 dozen serious patrol car collisions in the past 2 years. The flashing lights attract drunks) Would you please clarify how this is a "Rights" issue?

Here in Arizona, the Mexican mafia has offered a $10,000 bounty for killing LEO'S. The original bounty was for Boarder Patrol Agents, but it was reportedly extended to all LEO's in the state. There have been several cops ambushed so far.

Drunks to lights, like a moth to a flame? :D

So, what are the non accident numbers?

Using the numbers in the original post:
24 in accidents
6 outside their vehicles

All 30 deaths resultant from DWI's wow! Who needs juries with psychic judges like yourself.

Steve,

This is a very sobering and disturbing trend. While shootings are thankfully down (or at least level), it would appear that the automobile is becoming more dangerous to the average LEO. However I am NOT going to try to make any political statements based upon the deaths of good men and women.

Belay the sarcasm for a minute, and try and understand what I'm saying without any political posturing. Officers die in collisions at least at the same rate as violent confrontations. Most officer collision fatalities. (AS well as a lot of others) occur between the hours of 7PM and 3AM. Most involve alcohol. These are accepted facts. My main beef with it all is the lack of emphasis on the topic in training. Yes, Emergency lights attract drunks. Their eye lock onto them, and the car goes where the eyes go. I personally have lost 3 patrol cars to this in the past 3 years. (No, I wasn't in any of them. You leave the car WAAAY up the road from where your are working for just this reason.) We routinely put the oldest and worst cars in this slot. There are no "rights" violations here, Drunks kill a lot of people besides police officers working wrecks. I know of only one officer involved serious collision without alcohol involvement. Of course since the driver was 13, maybe he just had a difficult time buying beer.
