LeMat Shotgun Barrel Misfires

Lemat, 9 x .44 cal in barrel, and one 20 gauge shotgun barrel.

Beautiful piece of engineering, but has one major flaw.

The shotgun barrel misfires often (short throw of hammer, hammer slightly off center of the nipple, etc.).

How have people solved this problem?

I have heard of sanding down the thickness of the cap.

What else can I try?

If I had a lathe, I'd make an off centered nipple that would mate with the hammer. The threaded portion of the nipple would be center, but the nipple part with the cap would have an angle (if such a nipple could be installed). To adjust the angle would would cut at the base until the nipple rotated to mate with the hammer.

Thinning the face of the cap works for me. When you push the nose of the hammer down for firing the center barrel you should feel it hit a detent. You can move the nose past this detent and well be off center with the cap.

I found a gunsmith in California who specializes in fixing LeMats, expecially the latch problems and the shotgun misfire problems.

He has my pistol now, so stay tuned for a full report and information on contacting him.
