legality of turning a sxs shotgun into a double barreled 45-70 pistol?

I want to make a close quarters defense pistol for big and burly animals, I would like to take a 12 ga shotgun frame and make 10" 45-70 barrels to mount on the frame, and pistol grip it. I am not sure on the legality of it though. The BATF has listings on making AOW weapons for 200 dollars, but what i want to make should be legal, a double barreled pistol? much like the Howa pistol, i don't see how it could be illegal. but the whole conversion process is not written in stone. would one take a frame and register it as a pistol, or would that be illegal concidering it was never a pistol to begin with?

Help anyone?

With the usual disckaimer as to no legal training, the law, as I understand it, would allow You to make such a pistol ONLY IF SAID RECEIVER/ACTION HAD NEVER BEEN ASSEMBLED AS A SHOTGUN!!!! Once it has been a shotgun, to convert it, it must be in "any other weapon" status. I know, the whole thing stinks, but they've kind of got us over a barrel on this. Sadly'

paranoia gets a bit worse when their silly rules get even sillier, doesn't it?

HI! Are you looking to make a dbl-barreled derringer type item as a project or are you looking for a handgun in 45-70?

It sounds like a great project but have you seem one of these?

One for sale(and a great pic)

405 grain bullet @ 1577fps...Ouch! Would this make a great bowling pin shooting gun or do they count pieces of the pin still on the shelf as a pin?

I am sure I wouldn't want to be in front of it when fired.
I am not sure I would like to be behind it either, the rifles are bad enough.
I would prolly crease my forehead.:D

Actually, I'm rather fond of the rifle chambered for .45-70 Govt my father in law has....nice gun. VERY nice gun.

And I would like to get my hands on that Marlin Guide Gun.....

This was my impression also Juan Hunt Greer, unfortunately i have yet to find a source for recievers for shotguns that have never been assembeled, and for some reason none of the manufacturers i've asked seem to be to open to the proposition. the BFR pistol wouldn't be bad, but i doubt it could touch the bueaty of a properly made double pistol, such as the old english African defense ones.

You know

A single shot .410 shotgun.... maybe had an accident with the saw.... .45LC? (I'm drunk, so I don't remember the caliber) fits and fires well.. Just have trouble with the ejector.. hangs up but will eject when bolt is pulled back.. neat gun... but... OH MY G-D... the powers that be forbide it... guess that's why it's cut up and in a city dump right now... or maybe not.... or maybe I'm just too stupid and say stupid things to get any "feds" hyped up.. Who knows.. I don't.

If the object is to have a big bore double pistol, why not have a 12 gauge double legally converted to an AOW with 10" barrels and then load it with slugs?

its only a single shot but you can get a T/C encore in 45/70
& a few other calibers including 45 Colt/410 Ga

i wonder what it would take to modify a T/C to side by side?

Considering the lack of SxS shotguns on the market, maybe T/C would consider a double shot. They could even do a drilling.

Guys, have any of you EVER fired a standard slug or buckshot load out of a hand-held AOW?

IT HURTS!

And I'm 6'2", weigh 350, and am not generally recoil sensitive.

If you want a hand cannon, get one of the .45-70 revolvers - By the time you pay the AOW "making" tax, etc., you're there.

Personally, if you're worried about the bears getting into the cabin, get a stocked double-barrel shotgun that's just barely minimum overall length, with 18.25" barrels. That's plenty compact (the action doesn't take up hardly any room at all..), and MUCH more controllable. It's damn hard to reload if you've got a sprained wrist.

Well, of course it does! That's why I've never done it. ;)

But would firing a .45-70 from something the same size and weight be much gentler?

I agree with Hugie. It would be much more practical to get a .45-70 revolver and probably a lot cheaper in the long run.
