Whats up guys.

My title might be confusing and so might my question. I am origionally from NJ, very strict gun laws. You need a firearms ID card to purchase a firearm, and a permit for each handgun. I am currentally a legal resident of Alaska and plan to go home for the summers.

Lets say i knew somebody who purchased a handgun and decided they did not like the way it shoots and decided to sell it to me ;)

(1) What is the best way of sending it home to NJ
(2) What are some problems i could run into
(3) If i travel to NJ with it, Would i need to do anything since i am an alaskan resident?

Viper, . . . before you do that, . . . take a look at this story. I cannot verify the total truth, . . . but it is worth checking out I think, . . . in light of the questions you pose.

In case the link doesn't work, . . . it is forums.1911forum.com, . . . go to "Legal and Political News", . . . and check out the thread about a Gun Owners Horror Story.

New Jersey? Nahhhhhh, . . .

May God bless,
Dwight

I would go to packing.org and see what the laws are in NJ and then verify them against the state website.

wow that story was messed up. Ok so i guess i will not be taking it on the plane. Another question to ask is while up here in AK i bought 3 rifles, a Mosin Nagant, an M48 Mauser, and a Marlin .22 . would i need to do anything to take thoes home. I know i have to declare them when taking them on the plane, but i mean anything else.

New Jersey law defines “large capacity ammunition magazine” as a box, drum, tube or other container which is capable of holding more than 15 rounds of ammunition to be fed continuously and directly into a semi-automatic firearm.

Is that Marlin 22 tube fed?

Even if you are a legal resident of Alaska according to packing.org you can get a NJ Firearms ID

"Some NJ residents here on this board insist that non-residents who want to bring guns into NJ should have a NJ Firearms ID card? After recently speaking to Attorney Evan Nappen for two hours about NJ, I too now am inclined to agree. Attorney Nappen advocates it because it provides a positive means for a police officer to establish that you are a law abiding citizen. That's because the process is very intrusive and a little expensive, but the card is good for life, with no additional costs."

"He made the distinction between casually throwing the gun in the trunk to go visit Grandma (NOT ALLOWED), and a person renting in NJ who brings along their gun for target shooting while renting in the state. Again, locked in trunk, arrive at the rental dwelling, secure gun inside. Only take outside to go to the place of shooting and return home. West Trenton @ xxxxxxxxxxxx if you want to call and confirm yourself."

Sound like you would be ok if you transported the guns in the same locked container from the airport to the residence you are visiting and only removed them from the residence to go to the range.

for $72.00 a Firearms card would be a good investment if you visit on a regular basis. Could meant the difference between a horror story and a good time.

They will not give me one. i applied while i was a NJ resident and halfway throught my application process i became an AK resident. It should have taken the max 12 weeks to get the card, and when i went home for x-mas they still hadent sent it. i called a bunch of people and the end verdict was i was unable to get one because im not a NJ resident. Smells like a big steamy pile of you-know-what. great they tell me that after they get my $40 for fingerprinting and background.
