legality of building a tactical rifle from scratch

I am a machinist and have always been drawn to complex projects, so naturally I am drawn to all the technical challenges posed by designing and building a semi-automatic tactical rifle (something along the lines of an AR) from scratch...

I know there are other posts here discussing similar issues, but I couldn't find any pertaining particularly to semi-auto tactical rifles... It would be for personal use only, not for resale...

I was wondering if anyone here has insight as to the legality of taking on this project?

My understanding is there is nothing forbidding you from making a rifle from scratch relative to Federal laws.

You'd have to keep it and not sell it but you can manufacture your own firearm under Federal law as far as I remember.

I don't know if all States allow this though.

Your best bet is to do a search and you might even go to the BATF site to see if that is answered somewhere. IIRC, I think some mention is made at that site but I don't know for sure.

Thanks guys

Thanks, that link answered all my questions... It is legal as long as you dont import parts and as long as you conform to existing legal firearm requirements and assign a serial number... makes sense...

thanks again

do you mean building an AR from just parts. im pretty sure the firearm is just the lower, you can build an upper with whatever parts you want as it isnt a firearm. also you can ship prebuilt ones right to your door
