Legal to thread Barrel?

I want to have a slant muzzle break PERMANENTLY installed on my AK. The barrel is not threaded. Is it legal to thread the barrel and immediately have the break soldered on?

I wouldn't normally care about the legality, but I do not have the equip. to thread the barrel. I will have to convince a gunsmith to do it. If it is legal, I will have a better chance.

On a related note, can an HM91 Sporter (not sure of the exact name, a heavy-barrel AK variant) have a threaded barrel, legally?

I'm not absolutely positive, but I think that the slant brake may be considered by our friendly ATF to be a flash suppressor - If so, installation would be illegal on a post-ban AK.

I hope someone can prove me wrong on this.

Several things to consider, if it is a postban rifle. First as Bulldog pointed out you need to be sure that the device has been okayed as a brake, and not classified as a flash suppressor. Second, it is my understanding (from reading the regs at the ATF site, and many discussions of this topic over on www.ar15.com ) that on a post ban rifle it is illegal to have a threaded barrel that will accept a flash suppressor. What this means is that while it is legal to permanantly install a brake onto a threaded barrel for a post ban firearm, it would be illegal to do so while the barrel was assembled to the actual firearm (serial #ed reciever). If threaded while assembled it would be a violation during the time period between threading and the actual silver soldering, pinning, welding whatever of the brake to the muzzle. If unassembled, the barrel can be of any configuration as it is just a part, and not a firearm.

1. Yes, a slant muzzle brake is legal, it is not a flash suppressor.
2. You may thread a muzzle to permanently affix a legal muzzle device. I fact many AK type rifles are imported with a welded on 'thread protector' (nut).
3. Oleg, if the gun retains its imported status it may not have any 'evil' features. If you change the firearm to be of U.S. manufacture then you are allowed one evil feature, but most people prefer a pistol grip stock over the threaded muzzle. This may not apply to you if you want a detachable suppressor.
4. If you use solder it must be a high temp variety, over 1100 degrees. Other alternatives are spot welding and/or a blind pin.

These would be under federal law Sec 922 and have no bearing on what your state requirements are.

Thanks guys!
