There is an interesting notice in the Brownell's catalog concerning compensators and muzzle brakes. It says that they are legal to add to post-ban rifles as long as they are permanently attached by a means other than threading. For example, welded on or installed with a cross pin are supposed to be OK.
I would like to add a compensator, such as the AWC HyperDyne, to a post-ban Bushmaster, but have always assumed it was illegal. I seem to recall that the Crime Bill focused on certain features characteristic of "assault weapons," and that the rifle could not have more than a couple of such features. It might be OK to mount a compensator if the post-ban rifle doesn't also have such evil features as a pistol grip and detachable magazine, which would in fact rule out mounting one on a Bushmaster.
Does anyone know the details?
